Two men enter, five men leave - washingtonismoney - 07-31-2012

Was it just my memory, or did David Shaw not announce that the QB competition was down to Nottingham and Nunes after spring practice?

Probably nothing, but Shaw said that...five guys were battling it out at QB at the beginning of camp in this interview.

"That guy, No. 16, is gone."

and has been for more than 35 years.

I don't remember what Shaw said, but it seemed all the fan and media reports proclaimed a large gap after Nottingham and Nunes.  What Shaw said this week may suggest the whole group has improved over voluntary workouts.

To me, if Stanford's football culture is everyone works hard and the best guys play, it only reinforces to the guys on the team that every position is wide open during Summer camp, if Shaw says five QBs are in the hunt.  If the best guys play, what difference does it make who they are?  It will be sorted out, but Shaw wants the competition to be as fierce as possible for the most important position on the field.

Yeah, what he said - Redrum - 08-01-2012

Nothing corrodes an inherently competitive system more than favoritism.  It's OK to state at the end of Spring practice which players seemed to be the best at their positions at that moment in time.  The players have an interest in honest feedback, although most would have to be incredibly thick if they couldn't deduce that from practice reps and  minutes played in the scrimmage.  But that was Spring.  This is for the starting positions.  If we carry five QBs,  than five QBs should get their shot.    I hope I don't actually see this, but if Skov is still hobbled coming back from his injury,  I also hope the Stanford coaches have the good sense to start a better performing LB if he's earned it.
