Stanford medal - yvonne - 08-01-2012

The first 2012 Stanford Olympics medal is won!

Quote:Kristian Ipsen (right), '15, and diving partner Troy Dumais win Olympic bronze in Men's Synchronized 3m Springboard:
Ipsen, 19, a Clayton native, is considered the rising star of U.S. diving. Dumais, 32, is competing in his fourth Olympics.

Ipsen and Dumais flubbed their opening dive, falling to seventh out of eight teams. But they progressively got better as the competition continued and were in position to take a silver medal until a slight mistake on the fifth of six dives.
Ipsen is the second athlete from Clayton to win a medal Wednesday. He followed Kara Kohler, who medaled in the women's quadruple sculls.

Synchronized... diving - Redrum - 08-01-2012

I know, I know. Hours, weeks, years of hard, focused practice all aimed at mastery of the competitive event.  That puts it on par with all other competitive sports where the athletes follow the same focused, dedicated training process.  But...synchronized diving?

Reading the Bear Insider should be fun.

Re: Stanford medal - fullmetal - 08-05-2012

Cassidy Krug is up tonight in the 3m springboard finals :)  And by tonight I mean tonight local time (+0 GMT).

Re: Stanford medal - Hank 91 - 08-05-2012

Krug missed the bronze by .20 -- Can't imagine.

You've confused Krug with Tania Cagnotto of Italy.  Krug finished 7th, just under 20 points out of bronze.  She did look much better in the final than she did the day before, though.

Re: Stanford medal - fullmetal - 08-07-2012

She probably would have medaled with a good last dive...but it was not to be.  Her last dive was subpar, and that was that.

The men's eight (with two Stanford alumni on board) missed out on bronze by 0.3 seconds, but the women's eight (with one Stanford alumna) won gold!

Re: Stanford medal - Farm93 - 08-07-2012

The Prime Time Girls will get a medal in beach volleyball now that they are in the finals, so that will be another medal for Stanford and the USA.

And really how many athletes are getting more TV time than Misty and Kerri on NBC?

Re: Stanford medal - Hank 91 - 08-07-2012

Misty and Kerri certainly got the star treatment tonight. Yes, it was a great match, and we got to see every point, but it looked like the other semi was even better -- a three-set thriller. NBC showed us the final point, and that was all. That would be a drag if you were connected to Kessy and Ross, but NBC is clearly throwing their lot in with May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings. Can't say I blame them.

Over at PacificTakes, they're forecasting Stanford to come in third in the gold medal count amongst Pac12 schools.

I heard somewhere that this would be the first time in decades that kal out-earned Stanford in total and gold medal count.

It is not as if I am able to jump in the pool to help out the Olympic effort, so I don't want to imply that Stanford athletes are not doing well.  The reality is that to get alums to win medals a school is going to need amazing swimmers and/or a legacy of developing track sprinters.  In those two areas a 20 something year-old can win multiple individual medals and since the USA is good multiple relay medals will also be possible.

Several universities have more young alums with the capability of dominating Olympic swimming finals and Stanford has never really been home to track sprinters.

Things can change in 4-8 years, but without Olympic champion swimmers in the pool other Pac-12 teams probably will continue to excel.

Re: Stanford medal - FarmBoy - 08-08-2012

It definitely seems like there's a hole in Stanford's swimming contributions in the Olympics this year. Perhaps it's just the luck of the draw. I was wondering if the admissions office strict requirements of the eraly 2000's contributed to this as well. Even with strict requirements, you can probably build strong Olympic sports programs overall, but you might miss out on the stars.

Aren't we also missing the middle distance runners that have been from Stanford in the past? Haven't we historically had good runners in the 1500m to 5000m distances? People like Gabe Jennings and Michael Stember?

USA middle distance runners are generally like USA divers.  They may represent the USA in the Olympics, which means they are GREAT athletes, but unless things change USA middle distance runners, like USA divers, are not exactly going to start the Olympic competition as gold medal favorites.  It can happen, but I would be more willing to bet that the 2020 USA 400 IM champion gets multiple gold medals before I would bet that the 2020 USA 5000M champion will get any medal.  And that assumes the USA 5000M champion even has a qualifying time to be eligible for the Olympics.

Since this silly university as a stand alone country thing is based on people bringing home Olympics hardware, schools with the best american swimmers will find a way to the top of the university medal standings.

Phelps alone puts Michigan right at the top for example, he did attend classes so I would guess that is good enough to count him in the UofMich standings. Meanwhile Lochte does major lifting for Florida's standing in the list.  A great swimmer and a university is right up there.

Kerri Walsh, for example, is great but she is only one half of a team that will bring home one Olympic medal.  If the haul is the goal, swimmers are the athletes a program needs.

Re: Stanford medal - FarmBoy - 08-08-2012

Well, that ends the hopes for Men's Water Polo medals for Stanford affiliates. Croatia just crushed the MPSF--err--US Men's WP team. The team was stacked with Stanford alums, had a great showing in Beijin (Silver,) and good performance in the first few games of the prelims. But they ended on a three game losing streak (they will play one more game to determine 5th place, God knows why they bother.) I'm guessing this is the end of the Olympic career for Tony Azevedo, who some consider the greatest US WP player ever.

Re: Stanford medal - yvonne - 08-08-2012

Stanford volleyball just tweeted that Kerri and Misty have won the gold.

Re: Stanford medal - fullmetal - 08-08-2012

Congrats to Misty and Kerri!  What a career achievement for the both of them!

Incidentally, Azevedo's father coaches one of the Chinese WP teams.

They may not start as favorites and I understand you are speaking/typing in generalities. But credit where its due -- Leo Manzano won silver in the 1500m yesterday and Matthew Centrowitz missed out on the bronze by 4/100 of a second.

The whole university medal counts thing is silly. What's the point of counting relay and team medals when the entire contingent is not from the university? Of course, i'm not against celebrating the successes of alums and students.
