Some surprises on the depth chart (pg. 30):
It's not necessarily surprising that Tarpley is beating out Lancaster, but it is surprising that Hemschoot is "-or-" with Lancaster. Hemschoot's always been a high-upside guy, but still.
Also found it interesting that despite no talk of Ra'Chard Pippens or Charlie Hopkins, that both would be on the two-deep.

Thanks, Terry. I had been wondering what was taking so long with that. I do, however, wish they'd publish a hard copy.

I don't think there will be a return to the days of hard copy media guides. When Michigan and Ohio State decided to go to a web-based media guide a few years ago, I think that was the turning point. Stanford held out for another couple years before dropping the hard copy. The hard copy was expensive and bulky. It was primarily a recruiting document, but this generation of recruits is more accustomed to using their computers for things like this. A web-based media guide can make better use of color, which is expensive in hard copy. Eventually, I think we will start seeing embedded video in the web-based media guides. But I do miss the old hard copy media guides.
Re: Missing the old printed media guide - Redrum - 08-08-2012
that's what "working late" at the office is all about. There, in the still and quiet of the after hours office, you click on "PRINT" and 10 min. later you have your hard-copy media guide.
I miss them too. I am MUCH faster searching through my old media guides than using PDF reader to zoom in and eventually find the page and information I want.

Hemschoot was starting over Lancaster in the spring camp from what I remember so that isn't surprising. He's more of a 4-3 OLB but big enough to be effective as a MLB for us.

The problem is that the digital versions aren't quite good enough yet. Terry's right, though. I'm sure the time is coming when they'll be phenomenal. Imagine an app on your iPad with the Stanford media guide, complete with video highlights not just of last year's games but of Plunkett and Elway and Nelson and Gerhart. Maybe next year.
There are still a few hard copies out there. USC sent me a copy of theirs, and it's thick and glossy -- expensive. Arizona also sent me one, but it looks like it was copied at Kinko's -- black and white, bound with the same plastic thing used for your PoliSci readers back in the day. Not surprisingly, Notre Dame also still publishes one, but it hasn't arrived yet. (Of course, it may never arrive. I forgot to check my cutting and pasting in the email request, and I inadvertently asked the Notre Dame SID for a USC media guide. He still promised to send me one, but who knows...)

Did anyone else notice how the only True Frosh listed on the depth chart were on the offensive side of the ball?
This is curious given in the DL video, Hart said Shittu and Watkins could very well play this year, and because Hoffpauir and certainly Alex Carter would seem to have to be earmarked for PT if they are as good as cracked up to be, and the secondary is as weak as it seems.Â
I haven't heard too many people mention Hoffpauir and Carter as being likely True Frosh contributors. Has anyone here?
EDIT:Â Just saw this after making the post...

Sounds like Carter and Hoffpauir are indeed going to play as True Frosh. I do like the move of Bernard to Safety. No mention of Carrington, Ed Reynolds, or Jordan Richards in this interview. Anyone care to speculate what that means?

By the way, if there's anything meaningful to take about this, it's that an excellent 2013 run is very possible. Only 8 members of the starting two-deep are cinches to leave.
By contrast, here's what the number turned out to be for other years:
15 players from the initial 2010 two-deep left after the 2010 season.
14 players from the initial 2011 two-deep left after the 2011 season.
(unfortunately, I was only able to find the depth chart from late in the 2009 season--that is, the ND game. However, 11 players from that two-deep left after the 2009 season.)
Obviously unexpected attrition, whether to the NFL or by injury or by something else entire, is always very possible, but I still think it's a helpful indicator. If we have the sort of season the board consensus thinks we will, we're very well-positioned for the future.
Re: 2012 football media guide is available - fullers - 08-09-2012
A couple of days ago, Shaw told someone that both Shittu and Watkins would definitely play this year. I'd imagine they'd get meaningful reps in the nickel package. I also would bet that one or both will work their way into the base 3-4 defense at DE.
I would be shocked if the starters at safety aren't Reynolds and Richards. Carter would have to do a lot (at CB or S) to have Reynolds or Richards moved out of a starting role. That said, Carter will get his reps.
There is going to be a lot of rotation in the defensive personal. This is something the coaches seemed to try during the first couple of games last year, but we didn't really have the quality depth to pull it off. This year we should.

2013 and 2014, as well. In fact, that's why I'm rooting for Nottingham to be good enough in camp to win the job. It would be great to have a second- and then third-year quarterback on those teams. Those waiting for the Cardinal to disappear without Andrew Luck are going to be disappointed.

Just to follow up on this--I found the preseason two-deep from 2009 (
http://www.gostanford.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/stan/sports/m-footbl/auto_pdf/09FB-seasonpreview). There's a bit of apples-to-oranges about it--it's a three-deep, really--but I decided to pare it down for a better comparison (I can't think of a fruit metaphor.) If the 2009 three-deep were a two-deep, 16 players would have left after the 2009 season, meaning the initial 2012 two-deep would appear to have the most carry-over of any team in the last four years
by far.
My initial phrase was to say, "youngest," but of course a team full of juniors might be pretty experienced but have a lot of carry-over. Let's quantify youth and inexperience by eligibility.
2012 (starters) [backups]
Fr. 1 [9]
Soph. 7 [9]
Jr. 9 [5]
Sr. 6 [3]
2011 (starters) [backups]
Fr. 0 [9]
Soph. 5 [15]
Jr. 8 [4]
Sr. 9 [2]
2010 (starters) [backups]
Fr. 0 [12]
Soph. 6 [8]
Jr. 6 [5]
Sr. 10 [8]
2009 (starters) [backups]
Fr. 3 [1]*
Soph. 5 [8]
Jr. 6 [3]
Sr. 8 [10]
(n.b.: this may have the greatest batting average of freshman contributors ever--they were: Luck, Martin, DeCastro, Thomas.)

Per stories last night and this morning and the Sunday practice: Reynols is the starting FS, Richards then Carrington at SS. Carter is a CB.

Interesting looking at the media guide from 3 years ago...
- Shayne Skov must have come out of nowhere.
- Sione Fua didn't start until his senior year (the '10 season)?
- def. coordinator Fangio was to move projected starter Gatewood to WR that season
- and did they move an offensive guard, Phillips or Hall, to tackle?
- Alex Debniak listed as backup linebacker and running back

IIRC, Hall ended up moving to tackle

I guess the Domers don't hold a grudge. The media guide arrived in today's mail. It's glossy, but only half-size, like a TV Guide. I suppose that matches the state of the program -- half the team they used to be.
