The Andrew Luck Effect Continues -
Hank 91 - 08-15-2012
I've been a life-long Cowboy fan, ever since Super Bowl XII. My Uncle Tommy came over to watch the game, and he had some money on the Broncos. Since I was eight years old, I naturally started rooted for the Cowboys, and I've never stopped. My interest in the NFL has waxed and waned over the years, a pattern that matches exactly the rising and falling fortunes of the Cowboys, but something interesting happened over the weekend.
I recorded and watched Andrew Luck and the Colts, watched the highlights on ESPN, listened to the analysts dissect Luck's performance, and read everything I could about it. The Cowboys played the next night, and I didn't even care. Still don't, really. After three great years rooting for Luck, I'm not ready to stop.
Anyone else noticing this?

I adopted Denver as my second team (after the 49rs) solely because of John Elway. Since Elway retired, I have paid no attention to Denver. Somehow having him as an administrator does not emotionally count for me.Â
I imagine I will go through the same phenomena with Luck and the Colts. After all, as a small kid I was a Johnny Unitas fan. On the other hand, I have passionately hated the Colts franchise ever since the infamous 1984 middle-of-the-night move by Bob Irsay. (Actually, I think I started hating them a year earlier, when they had Frank Kush as coach. I remember being absolutely gleeful when Elway turned them down.) Sort of like my wife's life long hatred for the Giants after they traded away her hero Willie Mays. Hmmmm, Luck has put me in a dilemma...but I think I know which way my heartstrings will pull.

I have no doubt I'll be watching a lot of Colts games for the next 10+ years (assuming AL stays with them that long.) With Denver, it was especially sweet watching Elway to McAffery. If the Colts are able to find a productive Luck to Fleener (or less like, a Luck to Whalen) combination, that might push my viewing rate to 90+% of games, including preseason.

I'm a Cowboy fan by proximity (and fantasy football sometimes), but their preseason performance against the Raiders was miserable. Eh, it's preseason. I'll be following the Colts for a while as well.

I'm 100% on-board the bandwagon. I have a cousin who lives in Indianapolis, and when I saw him at a wedding recently, I said, "Tell me everything I need to know about my favorite NFL team."

I saw clips from the first Colts game... saw a few very familiar quick laser passes on the money... yep, the same effect was there. Bonk, suddenly I like the colts.

I'm not used to watching football on Sundays -- I'm bound to forget. I have my DVR set to record an NFL game for the first time ever :)
