AP Poll Comes out - washingtonismoney - 08-18-2012

Trojans number one.
Ducks fifth.
The good guys 21st.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - OutsiderFan - 08-18-2012

I'm going to surmise Mathieu's exodus from LSU vaulted USC to #1.  But I really don't think the voters are aware of how thin USC is on the lines.  Here's to hoping they lose at least two regular season games in 2012.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - JohnR34231 - 08-18-2012

They certainly have the high profile QB and the top receivers. Are they that good otherwise? I guess we'll find out fairly early in the season.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - BobK - 08-18-2012

Who voted Stanford the lowest?  Why the lover of all that is Stanford, Jon Wilner.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - yvonne - 08-18-2012

Actually, he voted us 23, but Mark McCarter of Huntsville, Ala voted us at 25, and four others didn't have us on their ballots.

Those four others--$EC/east coasters?  Never mind, we'll see them at the end of the season...

Re: AP Poll Comes out - Spiny_Norman - 08-18-2012

And we care about this because . . . . ??  Unless your team is contending to play in the BCS championship game, polls are pretty meaningless.  If Stanford is undefeated in October after Big Game, I'll start to pay attention.  Until then, polls (and the pollsters) are not worth any ergs of energy.

I can't get that excited about it, either - JohnR34231 - 08-18-2012

Most reasonable people would say we belong somewhere in the top 25, but not in the top 10. Is it 14, 18, 22, whatever? Who knows?

Re: AP Poll Comes out - Hank 91 - 08-18-2012

I disagree. While polls might not matter inside the locker room or to readers of this board, they matter tremendously to most of the college football world. Stanford has been ranked any where from 10th to 21st in the various polls, and what that means to me is that there's a decent amount of respect for the program minus Andrew Luck. If memory serves, we did not appear in the preseason polls following Toby Gerhart's departure, but now that an even more important player has left, we've remained in the polls. That's respect for the program.

Here's why that matters. The best high school football players in America pay attention to these polls, and it certainly helps recruiting Mike Sanford can sit in a living room, look a kid in the eye, and say, "We just lost the best football player of this generation, and we're still moving forward. We're not just one of the top 25 teams in the country, we're one of the top 25 programs in the country. We're here to stay."

This is why polls matter.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - washingtonismoney - 08-18-2012

I think preseason polls are worth glancing at to get an idea about what the conventional wisdom is. Often wrong--if you, a voter, voted Wisconsin significantly above Stanford, you're bad at voting--but worth knowing about.

Anyway, buzz and respect matter in college football more than most sports, but it's the buzz and respect we may or may not get at the end of the season that matter. That's why I'm pleased by all the voters ranking us so low, to be honest--it'll make our eventual performance that much better-looking.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - fullmetal - 08-18-2012

Or we'll end up dragging everyone else down but never really advancing ourselves as other upset-minded teams from the $EC/Big12/east coast leapfrog us in the "good-but-not-awesome" rankings tier.  Whatever...this team will be looking to prove themselves without Luck.  I'm looking forward to some smashmouth football a la UW last year.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - pincemob - 08-18-2012

It's great to be ranked.  You get more scores/updates across the various tickers and a lot more attention.

Here's why else it matters:  Week 3 College Gameday at Stanford!    USC starts with Hawaii and Syracuse.. I don't see either of those games bringing ESPN to town.    After us, USC doesn't play anyone until week 10 (Oregon).  You think ESPN will wait until week 10 to show the #1 team?  Our competition that week would be Alabama at Arkansas, except Gameday is doing the Alabama-Michigan game in Week 1.  I don't see them doing 2 Bama games before an SC game.  There are no other ranked vs. ranked matchups that week.. the sleeper is Michigan State - ND.  But Sparty could lose week 1 to Boise and ND could lose to Navy and Purdue.. not very appealing even if the game is on ABC

I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but as much as I'd like to see that happen (and yes, I did wake up early to get over to campus to see the latter part of Gameday in person and watch Lee Corso put on the tree hat), it's a non-starter.  Last year, Stanford football was a hot item that simply could not be ignored.  Entering both Gamedays, Stanford had the growing undefeated record and the overwhelming Voldemort favorite.  This year, before the U.S.C. game, Stanford should be just 2-0 having played ... SJ State and Duke, with a QB still to be named.  The attractiveness (compared to last season) is not there.  And there's the biggest reason that Stanford would not be a worthy candidate that weekend:  School won't be in session.  With zero students on campus, there would be a tiny crowd at 5 AM PST in the background for Fowler, Herbstreit and Corso.

Re: AP Poll Comes out - pincemob - 08-19-2012

You may be right, Embo.  Though I would think many of the same people who would come at 5am for Gameday would come in a a few days early for this game (first day of classes is 9/24, game is 9/15).  Athletes, grad students, probably some of the fraternities and a few others will be moved in.    Freshman check in Tuesday and I'm guessing more than a few Stanford Dads/Moms have circled this game as an excuse to come in early..  Plus there are Red Zone points on the line.  Maybe I am just being optimistic... you are right about us not having proven anything, but has there been a better series than Stanford-SC the past 5 years?  Don't say Bama-LSU... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re: AP Poll Comes out - fullmetal - 08-19-2012

It's going to be another Operation Get-The-Crowd-Out again for Gameday if they pick the $C game.  But local fans will hopefully turn out in full force...

Re: AP Poll Comes out - Griffins78 - 08-19-2012

Was up and there early last year - it was a blast - but doubt Game Day will be there for the 'SC game this year. For the reasons stated - mostly because the students won't be there and Dean Julie made a major push to get them out of bed and in front of the cameras. I'm afraid there would be more 'SC than Stanford fans there this time.

Currently, that day ABC is scheduled to broadcast:
12pm EST - Cal vs. No. 18 Ohio State game
3:30pm EST North Carolina at No. 25 Louisville or Navy at Penn State
8pm EST - Notre Dame at No. 13 Michigan State
My guess is that Brent and Herbie are going to be at Michigan State for prime time.

But the biggest game looks to be No. 2 Alabama at No. 10 Arkansas on CBS at 3:30pm EST.

I think we're on Fox but it isn't listed here:

Griffen78, Matt's College Sports on TV website is the best reference source for the games that are on tv.  Stanford vs. USC will be broadcast on Fox nationwide at 4:30 pt.
