Who will be named starting QB? -

Only an hour 'til it is announced. So what do y'all think?

Personally, I would like to see Nottingham get the nod, as I think his upside is higher. However, I think Shaw is leaning towards Nunes given some of the comments he has made over the last while.

Regardless of any preference that I may have, my vote for Nunes is based on Shaw's comments. I think we learned last year in several games (most notably Fiesta Bowl) that Shaw is very risk averse. Nunes appears to be the lower risk alternative.
I think it's a coin flip -

I think both are good prospects, neither is a budding superstar.
IMO, the run game will make or break our offense this year. The QB will have to throw well enough to keep the defense honest, and I think either one is capable of doing that.

Based on the final scrimmage stats, I chose Nottingham.Â
As much as you like to have a guy who can run the offense and not make mistakes, you still have to have someone who can make plays. Nunes completing 7/10 passes for 49 yards on Sunday, was just abysmal. Nottingham was 5/6 for 125 yards. Nottingham moved the team and Nunes didn't. I know that's one scrimmage and doesn't account for all the other practices, but I'd feel Nottingham is much more capable of making plays than Nunes if I was Shaw after that last scrimmage, and I would want the playmaker if I was the Head Coach.
Of course I may be totally wrong!

ESPN is reporting Nunes.

Bonagura saying that someone close to the program has said Nunes, but that Shaw himself has not confirmed.

Yep, everybody is retweeting ESPN, but no official word yet.

Bonagura has confirmed: Nunes.
I look forward to developing an opinion on this in, like, a few months.

I preferred Nottingham. Let's hope Shaw is making the right choice.

Well, my guess is we are going to see both Nunes and Nottingham play a lot in the first two games for sure. Can Nunes hold on to the job? We will see.
On another note, why does every Stanford QB sport a knee brace? They haven't all had bad knee injuries have they?

Will Shaw play them both in the first two games? -

We need to get someone ready for USC in the third one.
I'm not sure splitting time is the best way to do that.
Whoever the choice is (and it looks like it's Nunes) should get most of the reps.

I'm really scratching my head here. Everything I read said Nottingham has a much stronger arm and much better footwork. Is his decision making really that much worse than Nunes? I think we'll see both of them in the first 2 games...

I've never heard anything about their comparative footwork. And we've been over this debate several times back when it was Simms on Luck: arm strength isn't terribly important in a quarterback, as long as you meet the minimum standard. I've never heard about Nunes having a weak arm; therefore I don't care.
Wilner offers his typically evidence-based, balanced assessment:

Using the contrarian theory, we should expect Josh Nunes, first-round draft pick, in a couple of years now.

Note the time on that tweet, even before the guy was announced.

i forget where i read about their footwork but it was someone at the camp last week. Also, Nunes had like no yards passing in the scrimmage while Nottingham threw very well. Hopefully Nunes is ready for USC. He's got 2 games to figure things out.

Congrats to Josh. In Shaw and Pep I trust. I look forward to reading what they have to say about the selection of Josh. And, I share the view of others that if Josh doesn't perform, we'll see Brett get a shot.Â

I would prefer if his name were Jose Nunez, but I am fine with this.
Good luck and let's get this thing going.
