Rivals drops Savaiinaea to 3 stars - StannyBoy - 08-22-2012

Rivals dropped LB recruit Isaac Savaiinaea out of their top 250 players list and also down to 3 stars. The biggest faller in their latest rankings. Scout already dropped him from 5 stars to 4. Apparently he didn't impress at The Opening in Oregon, first I've heard of this though.

"@rivalsmike: not a #Rivals250 caliber kid, really didn't measure up at The Opening."

He did not show up on top performer lists but I never heard anything negative until now.  Quite a drop from 5 star status.

Btw, he recently set up his official to Texas A&M.  Aggie fans are excited that his parents won't accompany him.

Why would someone have Stanford and Texas A&M on their consideration list if not from Texas?  Seems really bizarre that a Stanford recruit would consider aTm.

Oh, and let's just say it is absurd to rate a guy as a football player based on a performance at The Opening, where guys perform without pads and helmets.  I saw the Saviinaea Junior highlights on YouTube and can see he is a Top 250 player from them.  Hard to imagine a young kid with his athletic ability and size getting worse from his Junior to Senior year, unless he is just getting too big for LB.  But again, it's tough to imagine a guy who runs and hits like him getting worse as a football player.

Brian Polian doesn't think it's bizarre at all. Polian, of course, was the guy who did the legwork on the T'eo commitment for the Blighting Irish two jobs ago. (It's a testament to how bad a special teams coach Polian is that he's been fired twice despite being a fantastic recruiter--well, except for Stanford.)

Anyway, Savaiinaea's going to Stanford if he gets in, and the drop is absurd. Savaiinaea's still a four-star in three of the four recruiting services, so whatever.

A&M might be desperate for LBs...and they did just move to the $EC.  Maybe he just wants to visit.

Yep...everyone wants to go to College Station!

I don't think Rivals ever had him at 5 stars so this would be a drop from 4 to 3 which isn't as extreme.

I was wondering about this. Do these sorts of events get weighted heavily in ratings because they provide some semblance of uniformity and normalization in the otherwise vastly diverse quality of competition different HS players operate in? Or is there something more inherently insightful about future development etc. that comes out of these?

I can see those camps carrying a lot of weight for quarterbacks, but linebackers? Unless he suddenly got a lot slower, it doesn't make sense.

Meanwhile, Eric Cotton received a third star.

Re: Rivals drops Savaiinaea to 3 stars - washingtonismoney - 08-23-2012

Cotton's been bumped on all the sites. He's the #20 TE in ESPN, the #25 TE in Scout, and a high-three-star (89 rating; 90 is a four-star) in 247. It seems people were impressed by him.

Cotton's video was just as impressive as Hunter Henry's.  And to me, because he's played OT, he's a better fit for Stanford.  Not that Show wouldn't have taken both guys, but Cotton looks like a great prospect to me.  Doesn't really matter if he's four stars or not.
