They've actually lost two for the year over the past couple of days. Whiteside is academically ineligible in 2012: http://www.mercurynews.com/cal-bears/ci_21417957/cal-linebacker-cecil-whiteside-ruled-academically-ineligible

Jason Gibson broke a foot: http://www.californiagoldenblogs.com/2012/8/26/3270757/cal-football-jason-gibson-to-have-season-ending-surgery

Knock on wood, but I think we've done pretty well comparatively from an overall attrition perspective. We should always be doing better, though.

When is a player on the team, but not? - Redrum - 08-28-2012

Over on Cyberbearz, the discussion produced one interesting facet to this story.  Whiteside, kicked OFF the team earlier in Spring, then reinstated, now ruled academically ineligible,  can if academically reinstated ,have 3 more years of eligibility.  The question I'd ask is:  how does he continue on scholarship at Kal and how would he pay Kal's tuition without that scholarship?
I would expect he'd go to a community college then reapply.  But if he continues on scholarship,  there is in essence no penalty or hardship associated with his actions.  Or inaction.    Wonder how a student or parent of a student that got turned down by Kal feels about second and third chances and full tuition for someone who didn't give a flip.

But, it's not an auspicious start for Coach Jeff's  blood oath that the academic rigor, oversight and support would begin immediately to turn around a team going backwards on academic progress and graduation.
