Duke looking impressive - OutsiderFan - 09-01-2012

They are crushing Florida International.  37-14 at Halftime.  Over 300 yards of offense and two receivers over 90 yards.  Of course, they gave up nearly 290 in the first half themselves, so maybe their D isn't as good as San Jose States'?

Last year when they played, they combined for more than 700 yards of offense, with Duke pulling out the win in a defense-less game.  This year the two teams are already over 700 yards going in to the 4th quarter.  Duke quarterback Sean Renfree is 20/27 with 2TDs and 1 INT.  He has thrown a 49 yard pass and a 60 yard pass.  Two long passes came off of play-action, another bomb for a TD from the shotgun.  Duke has one very fast receiver and their quarterback seems to have great touch on his rainbow bombs.

Yes, I would expect next week to be the first of many, many games which focus an offensive attack overwhelmingly on our inexperienced secondary.  We are going to need a much better pass rush and much better coverage.  Duke's offense quite simply looks a lot better than SJSU's.

As far as good news, Florida International has had a back rush 18 times for more than 100 yards against Duke, with a 6.3 average.  Duke may be a good team to get our running game back on track.

Duke has had the same coach now for 5 years and he seems to be doing a creditable job in gradually making that program competitive.  They will have absolutely nothing to lose coming in here.  It will be a dangerous game.  Thank goodness SJSU woke us up.
