If only Lowell Cohn cared so much about his alma mater.

Other than several factual errors (Rodgers played at Butte College one year not two; JT's contract expires in 2015 not 2014; donors do not pay JT's entire salary, the University pays $225K and Nike pays about $1.6 million out of the $2.3 million/year), the article was on the mark......
It's Petaluma. Nobody knows the difference - Redrum - 09-04-2012
2014...2015. It's all the
future isn't it?  And Lowell said he really admired the UC system's highest paid employee as a person. So there's that.
More to the point - Redrum - 09-05-2012
I think the significance of the Lowell Cohn article isn't in the accuracy or inaccuracy of the details. The significance is the lynch mob mentality has made the leap from fan message boards to the mainstream media. Well, OK.Â
Quasi mainstream. But it's made the leap...sort of like avian flu mutating to infect humans. But it's not the wishy-washy who's-on-the-hot-seat? kind of article. It's the first I've read that asserts the UC system's highest paid employee
should go if things aren't fixed soon.Â
From a Stanford fan standpoint, kal having an opportunity to improve its coaching isn't something to cheer about. Four more years! Four more years!

I don't think the issue is message board mentality finding its way to sports columnist pages. It is the fact this is (I believe) the first real harsh column I've seen written about Tedford. Sure there have been ones written that point out how he has to do better, but this one actually called him out. Cohn's sentiment has existed on message boards for several years, but it's now become so obvious to everyone, that it is now safe for a Bay Area scribe to rip the guy.
If California was in say Alabama, Tedford would have been ripped to shreds years ago. Cohn's column is the first of many similar form others to come, IMO. In fact, my suspicion is things are going to get so bad this year that one of the columns to come is going to call on Tedford to resign.

I don't know whether Cohn is anti-Stanford, but I do remember fairly well an article, written just before the 2009 season, wondering why people assumed Harbaugh was a good coach. He speculated it might just be because he's crazy and people think crazy people are good as coaches, or something like that. I don't remember exactly. Anyway, I do remember that this particular article was forwarded around a lot and posted a lot on the internet, because, as incredible as it may seem now--and however much they'll deny it now--a lot of people thought Harbaugh was not a terribly good coach before 2010.
Point here isn't to criticize Cohn per se, but just to note the dangers to judging too hastily.

The Petaluma360.com website is owned by the Petaluma Argus-Courier, a weekly newspaper. The Argus-Courier is under the same ownership as the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, a bigger daily paper. The Press Democrat website and the Petaluma360 website share some content. Cohn's Press Democrat column can be accessed through either website.

I agree... Tedford needs more time before articles like this come out. Besides, judging by recent graduation numbers, those pesky Holmoe recruits are still around and Tedford couldn't possibly be held accountable just yet.

Of course. T.edford's long record has established he's the Greatest 59er Coach Ever. To fire your Greatest Coach Ever is a travesty. Gotta keep him around.
And now an indirect cut at Tedford... -

Chron story on Aaron Rogers noting the most important year in his development into an NFL MVP QB was his year at...Butte College.Â
So Tedford's reputation as QB guru is based on basically one piece of evidence, Aaron Rogers, and now we find that the critical part of his development happened
before he arrived at Cal?

Ok, I stand (partially) corrected on Tedford's quarterback development resume. But only partly, since Joey Heater...err, Harrington, was a fine college quarterback who admirably filled bench space in the NFL.

Garvin, a fair number of board members are scratching their heads wondering why you think saying Heatherton instead of Harrington is funny.
