Not a lot to complain about so far - JohnR34231 - 09-08-2012

The defense has played well, special teams have played well. the offense hasn't been overwhelming but in general has played well. I guess the major thing would be driving deep in Duke territory four times and having to settle for field goals three of those four.

I don't know, I'd complain about 9-21 passing completions and 2-7 3rd down conversions.  Nunes simply has to get better and fast.  I'd also say It's time to play Peat and move Yankey to LG permanently, because the run game just isn't working with Wilkes at LG and Yankey at LT.

Defense is playing fantastic.  Really impressive.

Need better execution in the red zone.  A couple more TD's and this game would be just about out of reach.  Still, the defense showed up that we expected to see from the start last week.

Nunes' 9/21 is the result of a boom-or-bust gameplan. The offense wants him to go long and often. It seems we're dusting off the 2009 playbook again--this is why Luck only completed 55% of his passes that year. Will need to complete more passes within this approach, but it's basically sound, as evidenced by Nunes' 7.7 YPA. The side effect will be more of a volatile offense, especially since Taylor is not as good as Gerhart. Nevertheless, I'm basically fine with it. Nunes needs more experience and better placement, but he can execute this offense.

EDIT: the offense looks much better with Peat at LT and Yankey at guard. Throw him to the wolves, Shaw.

Yeah, my only real concern now.

But maybe Shaw is holding him back purposefully, to unleash him on SoCal?

Nunes still has a tendency to lock on to receivers way too early and this will cost us.  That said, our defense has played outstanding.  Offense has been opportunistic too.

We still need to work on run blocking, but I think that will come with time.

Re: Not a lot to complain about so far - Farm93 - 09-09-2012

Would be nice for Nunes to be more efficient on 3rd down.  Not sure that will change in the short term.
Would be nice for Nunes to avoid watching his primary target.  Again, probably not changing soon.
Would be nice for Peat to be at LT to enable the others to play their best OL positions.  Could happen.
Would be nice to get better red zone play.

But given the improvement between game #1 and game #2 it is very hard to complain.  I suspect that SC would dominate this Stanford squad at any point in the season, so it almost is a good thing to get a bit more improvement in a game that the fans already see as a likely Loss.  This way the team will have more time to improve before facing a set of games that could go either way (UW & UofA0

Speaking of not going to complain.  I wish Big Game was in September instead of October.  The team over there is looking mighty weak.  I don't know if they will get it fixed by October, but I doubt they will get it fixed in the next two games.

The team is 2-0, and the week to week improvements were just amazing.

While I wouldn't bet on us to beat U$C, I don't think we will be dominated by them.

But that could be wishful thinking. We'll find out in a week.

I missed the first game. Given all the negative comments about Nunes, I went into this one with very low expectations for him. Frankly I didn't think he was all that bad. He's no Andrew Luck (and probably won't become one), but I think he's capable of being a good one for us.

Re: Not a lot to complain about so far - yvonne - 09-09-2012

I don't think there were a lot of negative comments. Most people felt he did a workmanlike job. The only complaints were that he hadn't thrown any deep balls and most of his throws were shallow.

Drew Terrell revealed during the Council meeting that Pep Hamilton called a conservative game against SJS because he didn't want to put too much pressure on Nunes for his first game.

Credit where it's due -- JeffInCorvallis hypothesized exactly this when I and some others criticized the super-conservative passing game against SJSU.
