Inside the numbers - OutsiderFan - 09-10-2012

Stanford is 91st in the country in rushing, averaging just 123 yard per game and only 3.7 YPC (U.S.C. is averaging 6 YPC).  Stanford is #70 in Passing Efficiency (California is #65 in this category).  Stanford is #109 in 3rd Down Conversions.  And is #40 in Scoring.

To put it mildly, Stanford's offense isn't very good.  The good news is it has a lot of room for improvement.

-Playing Peat at LT and Yankey at LG  (Wilkes can't cut it)
-Nunes just getting more experience
-JRP, Young, and Whitfield continuing to develop at WR

On Defense, just like the last few years, Stanford is near the top in the country in Rush Defense, tied at #6 with TCU and LSU (not bad company), giving up 49 YPG and under 2 YPC.  Pass Efficiency D seems to be improving from 2011, as Stanford is #41.  Stanford is also #40 in 3rd Down Conversion Defense and #35 in Scoring Defense.

As was expected, Stanford's defense is good, and has a chance to be very good (probably not elite).  Though not as much room for improvement as Offense, there does seem to be some:

-Lyons and Carter getting more snaps at Corner (especially Lyons this week)
-Vaughters improving (I still believe Tarpley is better)
-Ed Reynolds continuing to do a solid job at what was thought to be the weak link of the team.
