SC's lack of discipline costs them... again -
scorecard - 09-15-2012
The last 3 games in this series have been nailbiters, that could have turned on a play here or there. The common theme between all three is a headhunting penalty that has led to us winning the game. 2 years ago, it was Chris Galippo hitting Doug Baldwin in the head after the play was basically dead to draw a flag that kept our final drive alive and got us closer to the game winning field goal. Last year, it was TJ McDonald drilling Chris Owusu in the head, allowing us to tie the score and send the game into OT.Â
This year, it was 3rd and 21 from our own 14 (after our attempted reverse to Montgomery blew up on us), it was late in the 3rd quarter and our offense is totally sputtering. We run a draw play that goes for nothing, but SC's DT George Uko attempts to spear Stepfan Taylor in the head at the end of the play and gets called for a personal foul. This is actually when I feel momentum really shift to us. Instead of punting to SC and giving them a short field, we run a screen to Taylor for 18 yards, and the field position shifts to us. We don't score on that drive but we pin the Trojans deep, get the ball back on a 3 and out, and score on the next drive, tying up the game at 14-14.Â
This doesn't even include the stomp to the head by McNeal to our cornerback that was already on the ground.
I hate to call a team a dirty but, ah, what the hell am I saying, SC is either a dirty team (or at the very least an undisciplined team), both on and off the field, and it cost them again.

SC are classic bullies. They look strong when they're pushing you around, but go crazy when someone decides to push back.

Odd thing is, I was cursing the play call as I was watching that play develop. It was obvious from the get go that it had no hope of even getting close to a first down. And then, in comes Uko with his gift. Yet another reason to not quick-kick on 3rd down, I guess ;)

There was a very similar late hit by an SC player after Taylor was down one or two plays earlier in that same drive. The refs didn't call it, and you could see Taylor saying something to one of the refs right afterwards. A play or two later, they did it again and got flagged. You can often get away with dirty play once or twice, but if you keep it up...

What about the play that injured Wilkerson? I'd have to see a replay to be sure, but it looked like some after-the-whistle leg pulling/twisting may have cause or at least aggravated the injury.
To be fair, on the final SC drive Stanford players came pretty close to taunting Barkley and then Lee, but the refs I think wisely let the brief verbal jabs go unpunished. I was sweating it, though.

I remember seeing Lyons jawing at an $C receiver, and I was a little worried that would backfire...but the front seven covered for 'em.

At around 9:25 in the first quarter, Wilkerson takes the snap and runs along the left side in his usual speedy, juking sort of way for 5 yards. USC Number 18 Deion Bailey manages to grab Wilkerson's right ankle to pull him down. Bailey remains lying on the ground clutching Wilkerson's ankle under him. Then Wilkerson suddenly reacts with a jerk and swats at Bailey's shoulder to get him off. Bailey then gets off and pounds his torso a couple of times to show Wilkerson what a big strong manly man he is.
You can't tell exactly what is occurring, but when that happened, I was thinking that Bailey twisted Wilkerson's ankle after he was down, and I thought that was really cheap. But if he actually injured Wilkerson, that pisses the crap out of me. If that's the case, I hope Shaw sends a tape to the Pac-12 offices for USC's cheap, dangerous play.

and there's also the player who stepped on one of our guys' helmet in the third quarter. He got the unsportsmanlike, but should have gotten an ejection.

Wasn't that Silas Redd with the helmet stomp?
It was amusing to see the position coaches giving an earful to their offending charges once the players reached the sidelines.

No it was Curtis McNeal with the head stomp.

And you can see it right here. I hope the conference administers the correct punishment.

Addendum: You'll have to replace "the university of south central" within the link above with the usual three letter abbreviation and paste it into your browser. Can this automatic replacement of certain phrases be disabled? It can be pretty annoying.

Funny, I was in the stands screaming as it happened. It was just ridiculous. I was really disappointed that he was not ejected, and let's say everyone in my area of the stadium knew my view.
I think he managed to make it look like it was a partial accident, so that enabled him to stay in the game. Not that it really mattered because he was definitely not going to crack the Stanford Front 7.
I doubt he will be suspended, and it does not matter. SC is a 17 point favorite against UCB so he won't really be needed. Also I tend to doubt they will "overlook" UCB like the players have started to claim they overlooked Stanford.
FWIW - How far forward were these SC kids looking? What opponent in their upcoming schedule was more worthy of their attention? What kind of coach lets his team look beyond an opponent that has won 4 of the last 5?
