Still not much respect - OutsiderFan - 09-16-2012

If David Shaw wants to get his team extra motivated for UW, he need only tell them how the college football punditocracy and by extension, poll voters, are not giving Stanford their due.  Everywhere I look the story is how the University of South Central lost and is going to have to work hard to get back in national title contention, even how the loss hurts the Pac-12's ability to get a team in the BCS title game.

Not a single mention of how Stanford is one of the better teams in the country.  Not a single mention of how Stanford could be a contender nationally, or even in the Pac-12.  The reality is Stanford has a great defense, it's rush D is only behind Alabama and Oregon State, and ahead of LSU.  And Stanford pounds the run.  At any level of football, teams that can do that are championship caliber.

The consensus weakness on this team coming into this year was the Safety position, and to a lesser degree the DBs in general.  Well, they now have six interceptions in three games, and have played much better than anticipated.  Lyons and Carter both made plays and an impact, and the Safeties, particularly Richards, were awesome last night.

Stanford has to beat Oregon, and likely the University of South Central again, but Stanford's front seven will dominate Oregon just like the University of South Central, and Stanford is so much better in the secondary now that they will be able to slow Oregon too.  Remember, last year Stanford's defense was not the reason Stanford lost to Oregon in 2011 (the offense didn't do its part), and Stanford's defense is way better in 2012 than 2011.  Stanford is a Top 10 team and should be talked about as a contender until it loses a game.  They are just too good in the trenches, and now in the secondary, to not be given that respect.

Thanks for the kind words.  Our defense is phenomenal but I am not ready to say national title contender  yet.  We are still 2 weeks away from eking out a win against San Jose State (though that win looks a lot better now after seeing how well they SJS has played since then).  We need Nunes to get more consistent.  There were several pass attempts where the receiver was open and he either grounded the ball or threw it over the receiver's head.  Maybe Luck has spoiled me.

Part of me wants to see what Nottingham can do.  A big part of me.  But maybe there is something we aren't seeing that Shaw sees.  I don't know; maybe a propensity to make bad judgment calls and throw picks.  Nunes is mediocre at this point.  But he is better than Tavita Pritchard ever was so it can be much worse.

It's nothing new. When Stanford upsets a highly ranked team, all the media wants to talk about is how poorly that team played, and rarely gives Stanford its due.

Irritating, but typical.

Re: Still not much respect - washingtonismoney - 09-16-2012

If anyone's written this article about us, I've yet to see it: http://goo.gl/2IJHw

And my guess is SC's a better team than Michigan State.

Re: Still not much respect - tfeldstein - 09-16-2012

Great post OF. This Stanford D was constructed to beat oregon and I project we will. We now are two deep at every defensive position and have the ability to blow up the middle. When Usua A is your 5th best corner, and the two guys at 3/4 are better physical talents than your starters, you are ready. One of the things that made me believe Stanford could win last night was Jordan Richards.  He ran with Lee/Woods et all as a junior in HS, why not last night. Although Delano is fearless, he was so physically diminished last season that the upgrade in safety play--who will get better and better--is brobdingnagian.

Don't forget the upside of being underrated. That was part of our assets that resulted in beating SC today.

Looks like someone finally wrote that article:

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/ncaaf/pac12/story/2012/09/15/stanford-upends-no-3--southern-california/57786854/1

The ND article - JohnR34231 - 09-16-2012

At least the guy gives us credit for being a tough opponent (kind of hard not to since we've beaten them three straight times).

What I think is funny is that he denigrates Stanford for having a first year starting QB. ND has a first year starting QB.

Re: Still not much respect - tfeldstein - 09-16-2012

What a great line by Gardner:

"You guys write the stories. We play the football."

Re: Still not much respect - scorecard - 09-16-2012

My favorite lines from the article:

Quote:But to focus on USC's flaws, and how far the Trojans should fall in the rankings, misses another continuing and important theme.

"They played better football than us," Barkley said.

Maybe because Stanford has the better program.

Well, SOMEBODY got his head turned around - Redrum - 09-16-2012

Jon Wilner did NOT,  as I predicted, find some excuse to downrate us on his AP ballot.  He voted us #6.  Now we just have to stay up there,  but that is respect from a wheedling little pecksniff who hates private bathrooms.  Ooops.  There I go again.

Re: Still not much respect - yvonne - 09-16-2012

Kawakami said Josh played better than Draco.

http://www.mercurynews.com/tim-kawakami/ci_21555161/tim-kawakami-josh-nunes-difference-stanford-victory-over

In this sentence, granted at the very end, he points out the brobdingnagian gap in total yards.
Quote: Stanford was the stronger team throughout, outgaining USC 417-280 in the game. And then, at the end, it had Josh Nunes being Josh Nunes. Nobody in the world -- probably including Nunes -- knew how fun that might be, until we all saw it Saturday.

Well Pat Forde certainly thinks this win was about Stanford

Re: Still not much respect - Spiny_Norman - 09-16-2012

This should work better for the Forde article - http://tinyurl.com/8jc78pm

How can you not love an article that begins, "It's official now. U.S.C stands for Undeniably Stanford's Chumps. "

Re: Still not much respect - Ratmandoo - 09-16-2012

Thanks spiny.  It looks like you beat me to my edit

He (Gene Wojciechowski) may not have written an article about us, but he did vote us #4 in the ESPN Power Rankings (http://espn.go.com/college-football/powerrankings/_/show/extra), one spot ahead of where he ranked N.otre Dame.

I watched the Stanford game, the State game and the Texas game at a bar with my brothers, each of us with our respectiive school shirts on.

I was playing the understanding, sympathetic role sooner than I thought I was.

At least the SoCal offense appeared to try to win.

I was one of the ones that predicted a Stanford win, and think they played a great game, particularly on d.  However, I'm still quite nervous about the Oregon game. Playing away, against a team that has had our number for a number of years - I'm not as confident as I was with USC. Thoughts?

Thoughts?  Yes...let's beat the Huskies!
