Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - unclechuck - 10-07-2011

Watching the relentless ESPN interviews with Yankees after they were eliminated last night I got to mulling on this subject.

My personal short list would begin with:

1) Yankees
2) SEC
3) Any other NY sports team
4) U$C
5) Kal

and so on. Any other nominations (with supporting testimony, if not obvious)

Re: Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - Robbie - 10-07-2011

Notre Dame is on my list. And the UConn women.

Re: Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - CowboyIndian - 10-07-2011

Oregon and Chip Kelly are moving up mine...list, that is.

Re: Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - oman - 10-07-2011

What's that?

Oh, it's German, isn't it...

Re: Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - unclechuck - 10-07-2011

Robbie - conspicuous omissions on my part. Domers would move up to #2 easily.

For UConn hoopsters for me it's mostly Gino and perhaps not systemic, though the incestuous relationship with ESPN does bother me. Also, I've never been to a live game with UConn fans so I can't speak to their behaviors as I could with Irish or Trojan fans.

scha·den·freu·de  [shahd-n-froi-duh] noun:
Satisfaction or pleasure felt at someone else's misfortune.

When Oregon St loses we yawn and check the point spread.  When Notre Dame loses we shriek with delight.  When Cal plays USC we pray for a 0-0 tie broken up by a wide chasm opening in the Coliseum sucking all down to the inferno below.

College football: Cal, Notre Dame, USC
Baseball: Yankees
NFL: Dallas
Any international: France, Argentina

Living in New England from 2002 to 2008 gave me a great appreciation for every instance of Boston team failure. The Bean-towners have become downright insufferable in recent years. Thus, I was the only man in the room cheering when the Giants beat the long odds against the Patriots in the Super Bowl and may have been one of the few non-Laker fans on earth cheering the 2009 NBA finals. The Boston ego won't fully deflate until the Red Sox have missed another 90 years of World Series.

I would have rather seen Cal win last night's competition. Oregon has become the Boston of College Football in my mind. A bunch of pink-Red-Sox-cap-wearing, fair weather blow hards who don't know their true place in the scheme of things.

And while I know it's in Stanford's best interests for Notre Dame to win every game the play from here out this year except against USC and the Cardinal, I will take joy in all their failings.

ESPN HQ is located just down the road from UConn

Similar story for me, FarmBoy. The Boston sports fans are about as obnoxious as they come.

I think I'm missing your point. Is proximity exculpatory cause for their rapt and sedulous coverage of the Huskies? Cause gosh, we sure get that treatment from the Bay Area press.

love it when the Schaden is a bunker buster.  Anyone who cuts off or condones cutting off womens' noses gets a bunker buster.

[/quote]UConn is practically in bed with ESPN. Recruits see ESPN as UConn's personal broadcasting studio. They are the local team.

Personally (in no specific order): kal, ND, SC, Texas (football)*, Duke (basketball), Cowboys, Colts, Lakers, Yankees, England (soccer), Mexico (soccer).

* Except for today! Beat the Sooners! Hook 'em Horns! Other generic terms of support for Texas!

OK, thanks. We're on the same page on this.

Re: Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - Spiny_Norman - 10-12-2011

A perfect day is for Stanford, Oklahoma and Michigan to win and for Cal, USC, Texas, Notre Dame and Ohio State to lose.

My family has 7 degrees from the U of M and I think I learned Hail to the Victors before I learned Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.  We always had a special place for Ohio State enmity.  My Mom drove the only car in small town Oklahoma that said "Woody Is A Pecker, M Go Blue" and "Happiness Is Crushing Buckeye Nuts."

The Buckeyes and their fans got to me again two weeks ago.  I was at Old Pro in downtown Palo Alto to watch games before wandering to the Stadium for the UCLA game.  The signs on the tvs that were going to broadcast the Stanford game misspelled the name of the home team - "Stahnford vs. UCLA."  Turns out the owner of a sports bar less than 1 mile from Stanford is an Ohio State alum.  It was a shot of schadenfreude to watch Michigan State beat the Buckeyes silly that afternoon.

And for the Texas fans, Boomer Sooner.

Re: Top 10 Sports Schadenfreude Generators - fullmetal - 10-12-2011

Stanford needs all the help it can get in rising through the ranks.  If an Oklahoma loss is what it takes for Stanford to get to the 'other' BCS natl champ spot, I'll take it.  (The 'other' one assuming that the SEC champion isn't a one-loss team that lost in poor fashion.)

Every team above Stanford in the rankings right now is fair game for my heckling!

Yeah Spiny, that's top shelf stuff: savory and full bodied with a smooth, lingering aftertaste.
