Extremism (of opinion on Stanford football) on the web -
fullmetal - 09-26-2012
There's a place called College Football Matrix that thinks Washington over Stanford is the fifth likeliest upset this weekend. Rationale? "Bottom line is Huskies at home with slightly less talent should still win, unless Sark cant coach them up." Erm, yeah.

On the other end of the spectrum, SBNation is running a weekly blogpoll, and Stanford picked up two first-place votes en route to an 8th place ranking. Bama leads all teams with 85 first-place votes.

SI.com's Andy Staples has Stanford eighth in his power rankings
here, and he notes that two computer rankings have Stanford first and second based on results from this season alone (without "preseason poll bias and the dreaded 'eyeball test'"). Those are the Colley and Massey computer rankings, respectively.

Last night on the Pac-12 Football Roundup, Slick Rick picked the Huskies to win citing "home field". We shall see.

He picked Utah over ASU last week. That was a bad pick.
For what it is worth, UW is promoting the game as the "black out of the century." The players are wearing black uniforms and the fans are supposed to follow suit. I guess this is good for home field advantage and selling tickets. I like the idea of the fans wearing black. It makes them less visible on camera, and thus less obnoxious.

Not to say a Huskies win can't or won't happen, but the College Football Matrix's guy's reasoning is not terribly convincing.
His model is a perfectly reasonable one to use before the season begins--it uses talent and home field, I think--but it doesn't seem to adjust its results to what happens on the field when the season starts. And a cursory glance at those results gives little reason to stay confident in a Huskies pick. Talent-wise, the Huskies have lost a number of players to injury or academics; on the other hand, Stanford is remarkably healthy at this time.
That's before considering that Stanford has, overall, performed above expectations and UW has, overall, performed below them. It's hard to respect a season that rejects the results of actual games--the things that actually count, you know?
Anyway, there are certainly more than a few reasons to be concerned about Stanford--if the offense doesn't improve, the margin for error is low--but this projection isn't one of them.

Home field, ha! You note that the game will be played at CenturyLink Field, which is home to the Seahawks and the Sounders. Husky Stadium is undergoing renovations, and with the game off-campus, I wonder how much "home field advantage" the Huskies can really count on.

I read up on CenturyLink Field and all the false starts that opposing teams have been suckered into due to crowd noise. I guess UW could make life tough for Nunes...maybe we should bleed clock early to tire out those vocal cords. I hope Nunes has a good voice like Luck does :)
