Beware of Sebastian - OutsiderFan - 10-16-2012

Avery, California Soph Safety.

He has incredible instinct for the game and hits like you won't believe.  For some mysterious reason he didn't start until the 5th game of this season, but in his first start against ASU he racked up 14 tackles.

Last week against Washington State he knocked out WR Marquess Wilson and the Cougar starting RB in the first half.  The hit on the RB left him temporarily unconscious, and was not a head shot.  It was just one guy running into another with incredible leverage, timing, and explosiveness.  I've never seen a hit like it before in all my years watching football.  As soon as the RB was hit, he just fell to the ground like a fallen tree.  Think the Poyer hit on Owusu at OSU last year, but not a helmet to helmet hit.

There should be some hellacious collisions between Sebastian and Taylor this week as Sebastian comes up in run support while California CBs lock up Stanford WRs.  Moreover, Stanford's TEs, particularly a pretty stationary target like Toilolo, better be prepared for getting rocked by #4 for California when he goes over the middle of the field to make a catch.  I'm fairly certain fans of every team California plays are going to remember the name Avery Sebastian.

Here's hoping Shaw and Hamilton noticed as well.  At this point, I'm not sure how much they're noticing...

No offense, but your post reads like it was written by a Kal fanboy.  Sebastian may well be a very good player, but he hasn't played much, so you're extrapolating a lot based on a very small sample (and then it seems like you're over-hyping the results from that).

Re: Beware of Sebastian - StannyBoy - 10-16-2012

JR Richards hits harder than Avery Sebastian. And I remember this guy being called Avery Walls in HS; not sure when he made the change. After a Google search it looks like he took his mother's name.

Re: Beware of Sebastian - OutsiderFan - 10-16-2012

Sebastian changed his name from Walls last year.  Here is his Rivals page when he was recruited:

Notice the "Pound-for-pound, this is one of the hardest hitters in the country" comment.  Jordan Richards is a fine player, but Sebastian is on another level as a hitter.  I believe you'll see for yourselves on Saturday, and over the next couple seasons.  Not a knock on Richards at all, just giving Sebastian his due.

Re: Beware of Sebastian - StannyBoy - 10-16-2012

well maybe but Richards seems to have 20 lbs of muscle on him so that would be quite impressive.

Re: Beware of Sebastian - OutsiderFan - 10-16-2012

Ability to hit is not about size.  Open field hitting is about speed, timing, body control, leverage, and explosion.  If everyone could do it, powerful hitters wouldn't stand out as much as they do.  John Lynch jumps off the screen in videos of him playing for Stanford.  So does Sebastian playing for California.

I don't see why being effusive about a guy Stanford is about to play is cause for such consternation.

Re: Beware of Sebastian - Spiny_Norman - 10-16-2012

Sean Cattouse was also a "hard-hitting safety."  He is a noun whom Andrew Luck turned into an adjective (and a verb, to cattouse).

That's nice rhetoric.  But as long as you don't miss, simple physics says big hits depend on two things: mass and velocity.  So size does matter.
