Mind-boggling fact - washingtonismoney - 10-18-2012

In this profile of Pete Alamar: Jordan Williamson is second in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage: http://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/article/Big-change-for-assistant-Pete-Alamar-3958372.php

Re: Mind-boggling fact - FarmBoy - 10-18-2012

I saw that this morning. That fact was put out there as if is spoke to the quality of Alamar's coaching. What it really says is that Pac-12 kickers are  having a down year.

Re: Mind-boggling fact - washingtonismoney - 10-18-2012

Yeah, in general I think the special teams are improved, though probably not difficult to do vis-a-vis Brian Polian. Williamson's erratic play is understandable, if frustrating. But I've been pleased in general with the special teams and have to give credit to Shaw for making a somewhat risky hire.

                    2012    2011 (through 6 games)
Net Punting:    46th      68th
Punt Ret. D:    56th      40th
Punt Returns:  9th        23rd
KOR D:            17th      54th
KOR:                36th      45th

Cum rank:        164        230

Looking at the numbers, it's hard to dispute Alamar has improved Stanford's special teams overall, but I'd like to see the Net Punting get better and see the defense helped out a bit more.  Zychlinski is very mediocre.

As for FG kicking being down, it's down across college football, and another reason coaches should stop settling for FGs and go for it on 4th down way more than they do.

Re: Mind-boggling fact - fullmetal - 10-18-2012

Or maybe FG% is down because coaches have decided to go for it more often inside a certain number of yards from the endzone.
