WVB: Stanford v Penn St -
Viking_Guy - 09-11-2010
At the break, Stanford up 2-0 on the Nittany Lions and their 109-match winning streak. Â The Cardinal was the last team to beat PSU in 2007.
But Alix Klineman and Co came to play tonight. Â In the first set, a thriller that went 28-26, Klineman had 10 kills and an ace. Â In the second, PSU fell apart after an early Stanford run put them up 8-3, then 14-6, with the Lions having spent both of their timeouts. Â A balanced attack and the Lions\' offensive woes led to a 25-12 throttling. Â PSU\'s top three attackers have 14 kills and 11 errors on 47 attacks, for a .063 hitting percentage; as a team they\'re hitting .129. Â The Cardinal as a team through the first two games? .450.
Now, Stanford has won the first two games against PSU and been beaten in the past. Â Lots will depend on coming out strong in game 3, and not letting up, nor letting Russ Rose come up with an answer.

23-15 Card in set 3. Â Another quick start, and the lead just keeps growing. Â Not below 5 points since 11-6.

And that\'s the match, 25-18. Stanford ends PSU\'s winning streak with a straight-set victory, the last two sets in rather beatdown fashion, ending the match on a Cassidy Lichtman kill.
For the match: Klineman 16 kills, Lichtman with 12. As a team hitting .389 while holding the Lions to .091. Getting contributions from all 6 hitters, with Browne, Carly Wopat, Rachel Williams and Hayley Spelman providing the balance to Lichtman and Klineman. Too many service errors, but on the whole a great team effort.
Congratulations to the Card! And to a different #1 team for the first time in nearly 3 years!

SportsCenter led off with the WVB story right after the Stanford/UCLA game.
However, it was kind of a sad contrast between the announcer talking so fast over the WVB story that you could barely understand what he was saying -- to minimize the time spent, apparently -- and the two guys starting a leisurely chat after that about how awesome the day\'s football game highlights were going to be.
I dunno, CompSci - Redrum - 09-12-2010
I saw the same ESPN piece and I thought it got very prominent play on a weekend dominated by college ball ( ESPN\'s self-inflicted "Monster Saturday") Â and ^%&@# MLB Â baseball . Â But they led off with...
volleyball! Â Not too bad. Â How often does
that happen on ESPN?  Even a little cleverness in the story angle =  the nation\'s longest win streak comes to an end (with the hook that it had nothing to do with either football or  ^%&@# MLB baseball. )  Sure, they hurried on, but we got to see video of some action and the celebration.  Not too bad for
volleyball.
