Supposedly Sherman is back and healthy - Redrum - 09-01-2010

Which might mean Mr. Browning will not be starting...although if one has to get thrown in the deep end,  playing a first college game vs. Sac. St. ain\'t the worst way to learn to swim.

Re: The surprises - Farm93 - 09-01-2010

Playing DB is a lot about raw quicks and great top end speed.  If one has that then coaching helps to read tendencies, WR & QB moves, etc.

However, one needs those quicks, and historically Stanford has a shortage in that category.  All hands on deck IMO because I am tired of watching 3rd and 15s get converted with 20+ yard pass plays.

In many HS leagues the ball is not thrown a lot, so placing a great athlete at CB would be a waste.  Far better to place them at Safety where they can be more involved in run and pass support.  Not saying that happened for Browning, but could imagine that Safety was better for their D and/or better for his QB development.

In the end, I trust the staff is better at assessing CB athletic potential than the media or the blogs.  If Browning is the 3rd or 4th best choice for CB then I hope he is allowed to contribute in 2010.  Why the team is not deeper at that position with prior recruiting is not really his problem.

Re: The surprises - slide - 09-02-2010

garvin, he played S in HS.  CB is new to him per another Browning interview.

interesting that our starting secondary will all be converted offensive players:  Sherman (WR), Thomas (QB), Howell (RB) and Browning (QB).

Sort of like being thrown in the shallow end....

Re: The surprises - ealtice - 09-04-2010

to be fair to the Examiner article author, the original article does say that he played safety in HS, but that CB is a new position for him

Re: The surprises - Sue_Ann_Duckett - 09-04-2010

I believe that story has been edited since its original appearance. Originally it only made reference to Browing\'s high school play at quarterback.

Re: The surprises - Nathan - 09-11-2010

Hey guys I\'m from Everman, Texas and have been around Barry since he was knee high this guy played QB and Safety he never played CB at all in HS just thought I would help you guys out this is coming from a guy that has watched him since pee wee.

You guys have a great kid on your hands he will be the next great at Stanford.

Re: The surprises - fullmetal - 09-11-2010

Txguy, welcome to the Cardboard.  Stick around some!  I\'m from Austin, TX.  You\'re also not too far from Mansfield, where Stepfan Taylor played in HS.  I keep musing that the more Texas HS players Stanford can get, the better the team will be :)

Re: The surprises - Nathan - 09-12-2010

Fullmetal thanks and yea Mansfield is basically down the street from Everman, but I agree the more Tx born the better and it don\'t hurt having a few kids from Cali that\'s 2 of the 3 main HS football states if you ask me.

Garvin I\'ve watched this kid start 3 years at a powerhouse 4a program in Texas. I was able to catch the game over here on ESPN so I was happy for that, but this kid has mad game if he can beef up a little more this guy will be the real deal back in that secondary. Still for his small frame this guy brings the lumber with every jaw dropping hit and his ball hawking skills kinda remind me of a Ed Reed
