Care for a Healthy Serving of Schadenfreude? -

Take a dip in the waters over at California Golden Blogs. This is actually from SBN's Pacific Takes blog, but the author is a Cal guy, and a CGB link drew lots of Cal fans. There's no real need to read the article -- just skip to the comments. Priceless.

I would love it if someone gave a strong take on the concrete likelihood that Tedford would be fired after this year -- totally devoid of any subjective rhetoric on whether the author's own opinion is that he *should* be fired.
Almost like one of the objective tallies based on the fiveThirtyEight model about the election, over at NYT...
The point being that there are of course political issues, wheels within wheels, financial this and that, etc. that steps into the works.
(Side note, did you guys see the Fox sports presenter guy, back at their central sports desk or whatever they call it, give his slightly snotty blast at how there was no chance Tedford was getting fired, because he did the stadium, because he did so much for the team, because bla bla...?)
One reason that I'm interested in this is that after a long long time of really "hating" Cal ... I've mellowed and am thinking I wish them well in all games other than one. (not certain about this yet.)

A California reporter last night told me even after the Stanford loss, Tedford has support among the high roller donors from the S.F. Grid Club because they like the guy personally. I don't know if that means he will remain at Cal until his contract expires, but it does mean the biggest donors have no real urgency to finance a buyout and bring in a new head coach now. Maybe when the team finishes 4-8 or 3-9 they will.

The 59ers really have to fire T.edford now. Everything's aligned well for them: there are a number of interesting-looking coaches with West Coast or Bay Area ties (Bay Area: MacIntyre, Taggart, Roman, Wilcox, off of the top of my head) and, if they fire him, they'll likely be the only Pac-12 job open. So you have the #1 choice of a nice market.
The only possibility of another opening would be the presumably highly-desirable Oregon job, but that's if the NFL decides they want to see the Chip Kelly era begin there. That would knock the 59ers down to #2. But if they fire him now, mid-season, they can take a page from Arizona's book and scout out replacements midseason.
(I don't think I need to mention what a gift it'd be to the rest of the Pac-12 if T.edford stays in the job. Any chance we can get friendly media members to start writing stories comparing T.edford to Mike Riley? Like Riley, I'm sure the turnaround is Just. Around. The. Corner. Gotta give him time, guys!)

So, garvin, you're saying that Harrington = T.ED

Schadenfreude? Yes, please! And a doggie bag for later? - Redrum - 10-22-2012
Oh, that was fun. I LOVE how they manage to mix feeling sorry for themselves, delusion about the attractiveness of Kal, and a kind of forced, insincere respect for Stanford.Â
I also get a kick out of:-- the speculation on the new K.al coach, and the assumption that Dan Mullen, an up-and-comer at Mississippi State in the SEC would be interested in UCB. It's a terrible idea based on a bad fit on both sides.
-- the cone of silence around Sandy Barbour, as if she were the wise and even-handed administrator whose clean hands can straighten out the coaching situation.

Oh the challenge. ;D
Ted.f.o..rd is an above average D-1 coach. The UCB AD is unlikely to hire another above average D-1 coach given their hiring history. So Ted.f.or.d is probably comparable to what they could hope to get next time around. A new coach would give the program a fresh start, but it is unlikely that fresh start will produce a winner at Jeff's level.
Ted.f.or..d is overpaid. That was more true a few years ago. With the escalation in salaries in the last 4 years, Te.d.f.ord's pay almost looks reasonable. Additionally, if the UCB AD really wants to hire a proven winner willing to try their luck at UCB they will need to pay more, maybe $3 or $3.5 million a year. And even that might not be enough to keep this unnamed super coach around for more than 3 years. So they could be paying Jeff to do nothing, and have to pay big money for this super coach and his super staff too. And if the coach is all of that, then I suspect that super coach would leave in 2015.
Memorial Stadium credit card balance is in big trouble. Somehow along the way the UCB AD accepted pledges of future payments from their donors as equivalent to real money now. CRAZY! Still, with the stadium built on those pledges the UCB AD NEEDS the team to win to keep the future pledge money coming in.
If UCB finishes 3-9 (a real possibility), then Te.d.ford might be fired.
If UCB finishes 4-8, then that win will probably be over Utah, UW or OSU. No matter the program, the team in question will have a highly paid, well regarded coach that just lost to UCB. That "it could be worse" and "look at THOSE losers and their expensive coach" should be enough to justify giving him one more year.
If UCB finishes 5-7 or better, Ted.f..ord is safe.
My guess. UCB finishes 4-8. They use 2013 to resell Ted.f.ord and imply a resurgance is coming thanks to some new recruit or coordinator or whatever. They reference wins over UCLA and this to be determined Pac-12 opponent to show that other expensive coaches in the conference are actually bigger losers than Jeff. The blues will be loyal enough with their pledges to buy seats for at least one more year with that promise and comparison.
In 2013, if the team is 4-8 or worse, Te.d.fo.rd goes because then the UCB AD will need to hit the reset button to keep the pledge money coming in.

Ole' Crump thinks 5-7 is now a good case outcome. That pretty much has to be the best case.
Keeping to 5 losses is crazy talk. While I would love for UCB to beat Oregon, that's not happening.
