Stepfan Taylor closes in on most of the career rushing records - Spiny_Norman - 10-22-2012

This is usually Terry's area.  But after watching Stepfan Taylor's career effort vs. Kal, I was inspired to see where he now sits on the all time lists.  Think of this - Stanford has been playing football since 1891.  Each week we get to watch one of the all time Stanford greats.  Ernie Nevers, Darrin Nelson, Toby Gerhart, Stepfan Taylor.  We should all enjoy the last few games of his career.

Career rushes
1.  Darrin Nelson 703
2. Stepfan Taylor 696

Career rushing yards
1. Darrin Nelson 4033
2. Stepfan Taylor 3616

Career Rushing TDs
1. Toby Gerhart  44
2. Tommy Vardell  37
3. Stepfan Taylor 33

Career 100 Yard games
1. Toby Gerhart 20
2. Stepfan Taylor 18

Re: Stepfan Taylor closes in on most of the career rushing records - dabigv13 - 10-22-2012

Now if Stepfan can average 59 yards per carry with his next 7 attempts, he'll match Darrin Nelson's simply incredible 5.73 career average! Damn Darrin Nelson must have been electrifying to watch.

In any case I don't think anybody could've predicted ST would be breaking Toby Gerhart's records, let alone become Stanford rushing leader. He is the Emmit Smith of Stanford rushers- there are no deficiencies in his game, he isn't the shiftiest, isn't the fastest, isn't the strongest, but he does it all damn well.

Re: Stepfan Taylor closes in on most of the career rushing records - jayasena - 10-22-2012

I've only been a fan since the late 90's so I don't know where a string of talents like Gerhart, Luck, DeCastro, Fleener, Martin and Taylor belong in the historical context but it really has been a privilege to see all of these guys in a period of a few short seasons.

As impressive as it is, it's not entirely surprising that Taylor is in a position to top several of these all-time lists. He was a highly rated recruit out of high school (more so than Gerhart, although I think we can all agree that Toby solidly outperformed expectations, perhaps because he fit into Harbaugh's offensive style so well).

Dabigv, Darrin Nelson was indeed amazing to watch. I remember one time when he was running, and two guys were bearing down on him, and the next thing anyone knew, those two guys were on the ground and he was going into the end zone. No idea how he did it, but it was sure fun watching him do it.

Nelson's ability as a runner was matched only by his receiving skills--he caught screens, swings, slants, bombs--he must have been a nightmare for opposing defensive coaches.

I'm happy to admit when I'm dead wrong about a Stanford player. During 2009, in his limited action, I was very unimpressed by Stepfan. Perhaps it was the contrast between he and Toby, but I did not think he had what it takes to excel at RB in the Pac10/12. I was one of those hoping Wilkerson would break out and take over the #1 spot in 2010. Clearly, I should not be paid to evaluate football talent. Stepfan just gets better and better and does all of the unrecognized things, like picking up the blitz.

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I've been impressed by his demeanor and personality as well. Hopefully he'll get a decent shot at the next level.

Kudos to Stepfan and thanks for carrying the team this year (along with the TWU)

I've posted this before, so most interested parties have probably already read it, but I thought I'd re-post the link to the Darrin Nelson interview I ran a few months ago. One note that didn't make the piece: I've interviewed a lot of athletes and authors for similar pieces over the years, and Darrin was definitely one of the nicer ones. Just a great guy to talk to.

Re: Stepfan Taylor closes in on most of the career rushing records - teejers1 - 10-23-2012

I think Darrin Nelson was the best football player in Stanford history (excepting Ernie Nevers).

That is a ridiculously grand statement, given Elway and Luck, but it's hard to overstate how incredible Nelson was at Stanford.  The stats show that, but don't do him justice.  Electrifying is the best descriptor: it was an absolute pleasure/thrill watching that guy play football.

(BTW, I'm equally content saying that Elway, Luck and Nelson are the best football players ever to wear a Stanford uni).

Only half of the story - stanfan - 10-23-2012

Darin Nelson was a remarkable runner, but that's only half of the story.  He also caught 47, 50, 50 and 67 passes in his 4 years @ Stanford  for 16 TDs and almost 2400 yards!  I did have the pleasure of watching him play a couple of times.  Cat-quick, amazing balance, astounding cuts, and as fast sideways as he was straight ahead (and he was very fast).  What a weapon!  Sadly, his son played (and played very well) for the Ducks as a defensive back a few years ago.  Darrin was not only a wonderful football player, he is a genuinely nice guy and very approachable.

I love those guys, but to be taken seriously, maybe you should qualify that statement a little further.... with "best players I've seen" or something.
"Ever to wear a Stanford uni" includes a lot of legendary players, including the best college player of the first half of the 20th century, Ernie Nevers (as named by SI) and our lone Voldemort winner and Rose Bowl champ (which none of those you named managed to achieve), Jim Plunkett.
(Edited because I just realized we were no longer in the 20th century. Just in time!)
