Luck vs. RG III - Cardinal96 - 10-25-2012

A good article by Rick Reilly about how Luck is underrated this year in the NFL.

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/8550792/andrew-luck-better-qb-robert-griffin-iii

He looks closer at the statistics and finds that Luck is attempting more difficult throws than RG III and is being asked to do much more for his team.

Re: Luck vs. RG III - Hank 91 - 10-25-2012

If Dante had divined a 9th circle of journalism hell, the reporters in the three mouths of Satan would undoubtedly be Bill Plaschke, Skip Bayless, and Rick Reilly. While I like that he's supporting our man Mr. Luck, I'm irritated that he's essentially cribbing a piece that appeared in the New York Times two days ago. Sure, there's none of Reilly's brilliant metaphors and folksy phrasing, but there's a much deeper statistical analysis. I recommend it highly.

Re: Luck vs. RG III - washingtonismoney - 10-25-2012

Bill Simmons isn't in the 9th circle for at least two reasons:
1) He is much more funny than the other two
2) He runs Grantland, which is a pretty high-quality publication.

Agreed. I'm not down on Simmons. Sometimes his shtick gets a bit old, but the main thing is this -- he doesn't pretend to be a journalist.

Re: Luck vs. RG III - fullmetal - 10-25-2012

The NYTimes blog post brings up a point I had considered as well: why is Luck being asked to do so many difficult things?  I figure RG3 is somehow benefiting from smart coaching that plays to his strengths and tries not to set him up with adversity, but if Luck's coaches are similarly motivated, then maybe Indy is less talented than Washington by a wider margin than I'd thought.

Re: Luck vs. RG III - FarmBoy - 10-26-2012

All of the Luck vs. RGIII debate is unfortunate. It does a disservice to both players, though I suspect neither of them cares or even pays attention much. Bob Kravitz at the Indy star also poached from the NYTimes article to throw his hat in the ring with Luck (http://www.indystar.com/article/20121025/SPORTS15/210260318/). He notes that he has been on the Brady side of the Manning vs. Brady debate, so backing Luck is not 100% homerism.

I don't think we'll know which player is "better" until were a few years out. They're playing in very different circumstances, with very different support personnel surrounding them. Luck has Reggie Wayne, but RGIII has a strong run game.

IMO, the Colts offense is a bit too high risk-reward for the personnel to succeed in executing. When it's clicking, you get the drives like at the end of the Green Bay and the first couple against the Browns. But when it's not, there are a lot of three and outs and it seems like you slowly lose the field position game. All those deep throws relies on really good timing between Luck and his receivers, which I don't think has been developed either.

I would love to see Luck pull off a 8-8 or better campaign. The schedule appears favorable, but then again, they lost to the Jaguars and laid an egg against the Jets.

Re: Luck vs. RG III - Cardinal96 - 10-26-2012

The Colts are now my favorite NFL team and I am pulling for them big time.  A 9-7 playoff appearance would be sweet.
