Nunes for Voldemort 2013! -
Farm93 - 10-28-2012
Sorry! Just wanted to create a subject header that was slightly more likely to happen than Nottingham starting over Nunes this year.
Nunes is our 6-2 starter. Nunes is undefeated at home and in the State of California and has only suffered two respectable road losses. Nunes may not be flashy but the TEAM is winning enough for him to keep his role. This is a classic situation where the most popular player on the team is the backup QB. More importantly, Nunes is getting better, despite the questionable support from his "fans".
Nunes for Voldemort. :)

Stanford is a relatively good team with an excellent defense and a good run game. The offensive line is young, but talented and improving. However, although the team is winning, the quarterback is not good by any measure. The Voldemort is an individual award that is often impacted by team performance (see Toby Gerhart), but it is not a team award.
As others have said, Nunes may be and probably is a nice guy, but he's not a good quarterback. It's possible that the others are even worse, but it's hard to argue that he's a good quarterback.

You guys are better observers than I.
Is our offensive line improving at an appropriate pace?

In its current incarnation (i.e. Yankey at LT w/ Danser and Wilkes at G) it's got a ceiling but would be solid enough for most teams. Unfortunately, given the rest of the offense, we need it to be dominant.
We're seeing more and more Peat, Murphy and Garnett--Garnett actually got the start, I think--but I'd like to see it accelerated even more quickly. Not because Danser/Wilkes are bad or anything, but we need more upside on this offense--everywhere.

Yesterday the problem was YAC, IMHO.
Everybody that got the ball seemed to be stopped cold with the first contact. More than once I was shocked that Wazzu would just stuff a runner on a one on one play. So that was not on Nunes IMO. Also, Wazzu had people flying through the air making all kinds of crazy circus catches. Nunes does not get that support.
Nunes is not that accurate. That is annoying.
Nunes does not trust his reads all of the time. That is curious.
Nunes loses track of the play clock. That is frustrating.
And yet, Nunes will be the starter. A little bit of fan loyalty and support probably was the way to go yesterday. As frustrating as his confidence-less play can be, booing the guy or the coach during the game seems like a bad way to improve his confidence mid-game. IMHO.
Luck is taking a terrible team to the AFC playoffs at this point, so I think Stanford ticket holders have lost perspective on what an average college QB can deliver. Luck delivered 9s or 10s on every possible QB attribute. My guess is that Nottingham, like Nunes, has quite a few areas that need improvement that people in the stands would scream about if he was the starter.

that's what was reported to me Saturday night. Going Ivy League to avoid losing eligibility.

Do we have a credible source on that? Hope it's not true. He certainly seems to have gotten a raw deal.
Hard to fathom how he could go from next in line last year, to completely off the team, while we struggle so mightily at his position.

Would he transfer if we had all-world talent (e.g. Andrew Luck level) at QB? The question is of no real significance, but I'm curious about contributing factors other than "no playing time."
Ivy League...what a step down :(Â

I expected to see a Carson Palmer comparison to start the thread :)
Palmer's first full year as starer looked remarkably like where Nunes is headed. The general consensus on Palmer throughout the conference during his early years was also similar to Nunes' -- that he'd never be a serviceable D1 QB.
Palmer in 2000: 228/415 (54.9%) for 2914 yards, 16 Passing TDs; 18 Interceptions; 7.0 Y/A; 118 rating
Nunes in 2012 so far: 121/230 (52.6%) for 1620 yards, 10 passing TDs; 7 interceptions; 7.0 Y/A; 120 rating
In case anyone thinks I'm seriously suggesting that Nunes will win a Voldemort -- I'm not. I'm merely pointing out an interesting parallel* that seemed to fit with the thread.
Bummer if Nottingham is transferring, but agree with Yvonne. Can't blame him at all.
* Of course, Palmer was a red-shirt Soph at the time (had started 8 games before 2000 though) while Nunes is a Senior. Plus I'm hoping Shaw is nothing like Paul Hackett and we can fix our offensive woes without a coaching change.
