Attendance? -

I watched the game on TV Saturday. It looked like the stadium was only 50 to 60% full. From those who were there, is that estimate correct? Â

probably not too far off, lots of empty seats.

If Stanford was 6-1 or 7-0 heading into that WSU game, would attendance have been better?
Hopefully the answer is yes. Honestly, I can't blame too many people for not wanting to go see one of the most uninspiring offenses in college football, except for the fact the Defense is one of the best in program history.

Others have said the Giants were a big enough draw to siphon away attendance. We'll never know for sure; I just hope the stadium is full when Oregon State comes to visit.
I have my doubts.

The "crowd" followed its usual pattern of trickling in during the first quarter, but many people also left at halftime or during the second half, presumably to watch Giants on TV. I would venture to say there were fewer people in the seats at then end of the game than there were at kickoff, despite our being ahead in a close game.Â
Giants game was on some of the TV's above concession stands, but there were not a lot of people watching. Some, but not a lot. People just left the game.Â

I would bet the answer is no. Stanford just does not have a big or hardcore following, certainly not hardcore enough to compete with the Giants in the World Series. Evidence for this? Remember last year's Oregon game, with Andrew Luck, with College Gameday, with a shot at the national championship on the line, hyped up around the country for weeks? If you are a Stanford fan, you are coming out for that game, right? Nope - conservatively, 30-40% of the stands full of Oregon fans.

This is not evidence. This is conjecture. I was at the game and believe your "conservative" estimate is off by a bunch.

There are a lot of season ticket holders that likely were not going to show up for Washington State even if the Giants were not in the World Series.
Stanford has very few undergrad alums living in the immediate area, so the Stanford AD relies upon locals fond of football to fill the house. It is a very tough challenge. Wazzu vs Stanford is just not going to be a big enough draw even for those that have purchased season tickets. It was an easy miss for a casual fan or for people with low cost family plan tickets and there was no real hope of a walk up crowd.
The stadium holds ~50K. The AD says it sold ~40K for the game. I would guess that there were 20,000 people in the stands, and that is probably too generous. The student section had empty sections, the GA areas were wide open, and the corners were empty. And there were quite a number of empty seats on the shady sideline too.
Oregon State historically is also not a game that all season ticket holders plan to attend, so it will be interesting to see what happens on November 10th.
My guess is that the AD will announce attendance of 43K. I would also guess 30,000 will actually appear and that will include 4,000 Beaver fans. If the Beavers had won in Seattle then I would have guessed sales of 47K or even 48K fueled by Beaver fans driving down to see their top 10 team's last big challenge before the Ducks.
My guess is the next sellout at Stanford Stadium will be on Nov 30th, 2012. ;)

Ok, to match the high editorial standards of this forum I should qualify that this evidence is based on my personal qualitative observations and I did not sit at the door to count the number of fans of each side. However, in my section (upper level goal, not the visitors corner), it was easily 50/50, and as you got into the corner/endzone Oregon fans were clearly the majority. I suppose you may have had a much different experience in the more expensive seats with longer-time season ticket holders. Regardless, my point was that for a major, successful collegiate program in a home game of that stature, you would expect a packed house of home fans, and that is not what we had. As such, I find it unrealistic to expect a sellout crowd for a game like Wazzu regardless of whether we were 5-2 or 7-0.

OK..there's a nice intro to your "conservative" estimate, which may match up with your premise, but not with reality.
