and looked at his recruiting profile.

In all the highlights of him playing QB I never saw him once look off his primary receiver or go through anything resembling reading the field.  If his first receiver wasn't available, he took of running.  Obviously, not too many H.S. QBs are going to go through multiple receiver progressions.  It has to take some time to learn how to do it effectively at the college level if you did not do it in High School, so perhaps Hogan has been getting better at it, and his whole package has surpassed Nottingham.

Interestingly, Hogan was pegged as a "pro-style" QB as a recruit, while he seems to be playing a dual threat role with Stanford.  It was kind of odd to me seeing him run in his highlight video because it almost seemed like he looked slower to me than he has on the field for Stanford.

Hogan's video demonstrates a pretty strong arm and a much quicker release than Nunes.  Importantly, he throws well on the run and throws short passes accurately.

Hmm.  That kind of worries me actually.  Garrett Gilbert, the touted QB savior of the Texas program after Colt McCoy left, was pretty much a one-read QB as well, and that turned out fairly disastrously for Texas (he's plying his trade at SMU now).  At least Hogan has legs--Gilbert wasn't as mobile.

Note that Gilbert's father, Gale Gilbert, was the kal quarterback for the '82 Big Game...yes, that of The Play.

Of the various recruiting outfits (Rivals, Scout, ESPNU, etc) I noticed a little bit ago that MaxPreps loved Hogan. Well, bad choice of words. I don't know if their star system differs from the others but from what I remember they gave him 4 and 1/2 stars and in their summary of Stanford's recruits for that class they listed Hogan as Stanford's "sleeper" recruit (seemed they chose a sleeper recruit for each team).
