UCB's Keenan Allen Out - Likely until NFL -
Farm93 - 11-01-2012
The (former) UCB coach had Keenen Allen out on the field for an onside kick recovery effort when the team was down by multiple touchdowns with about a minute to go in the Utah game. Allen appears to have "only" injured his PCL.
But now it seems likely Allen will not play for the rest of the year. What I love about the Bay Area media is that the stories imply Allen's loss somehow impacts UCB's chances at a bowl game. With or without Allen UCB is probably not beating UW. UCB is DEFINITELY not beating Oregon and UCB almost certainly will not beat Oregon State. Why does our local media focus on this team and the bowl chances? 3-6 people. It is over. And even if a 3 win miracle occurs to reward will be, at best, the SF Hunger bowl.
The injury seems certain to turn Jeff's seat from warm to on fire. Why was the best athlete on the team trying to recover an onside kick in a game that was clearly over? Allen is almost certainly lucky if all he damaged was his PCL. Jeff's future in football is probably not quite as clear now.

Agree
The injury will have zero impact on the upcoming three games. Most of the alums believe that they will all be lost unless the NCAA grants the entire 2004 team an opportunity to return to campus for an encore. Allen's presence would have had no bearing on the outcomes...
Disagree
The Allen injury will have no impact on the future of the current incumbent's tenure. He will be replaced for reasons other than playing Allen at the end of the Utah game. In fact, I think playing Allen in that situation was the right move. Injuries are, sadly, part of the game...

Keeping Allen on the onside kick recovery team is probably fine. If the team was down by 1 to 8 points then his great skills could be of value.
Kicking an onside Kick with 78 seconds while down by 22 points? A very, very, very bad coaching decision. Onside kicks are rather dangerous, for both teams, and there was no way at all that UCB recovers 3 onside kicks and scores 3TD in that 78 second span. But hey, we know Jeff needs to do anything at this point to keep his job.
My guess is more than a few 3 and 4 star recruits will be told about how little ole Jeff thinks of his players and their health this week. I was going to write 5 star recruits, but I don't think UCB has a chance at any 5 star recruit this year.
For the record, I hope Jeff keeps his job. The chances that he turns this around are rather slim, so I would like to see him at UCB for at least a few more years.

It's not COMPLETELY outside the realm of possibility.Â

We are talking about the guys who invented ridiculous scoring at the end of games. BTW -- I didn't even realize it was the anniversary of the play -- I mean I don't think C.al even mentioned it once during Big Game.

yes, but in that video there was of 2:36 left when they kicked the first on-side kick, not 1:18.....

Let's put it this way.
With only 78 seconds left and the team still down by 22, UCB would need to recover 3 kicks, drive ~150 yards and eventually get a two point conversion too. The odds of all of that happening are more than slim. There was a reason the score was 49-27, so it is not as if Utah was not the better team for the first 58:42 or would just sit and watch UCB do all of this stuff.
Ignore the ability to drive 150 yards against a better team and the significant time constraints. The odds of getting 3 onside kicks and successfully converting the 2 point attempt in 1 in 1000.
The odds of a key player getting hurt? Those odds were much, much higher. And an injury could reduce the chances of a win later in the year.
Don't believe me? Just ask Keenan Allen. Hopefully he will be healthy enough to prepare for the combine.. A healthy Keenan likely was going to dazzle at the combine and soar to a top 10 draft pick. Now, that might not happen. Thanks Coach!

Neither Jackson or Allen will have played their Senior years.
