Luck looking good against LA Jaguars - Farm93 - 11-08-2012

Andrew Luck is looking great.  Again.

There are a lot of empty seats in Jacksonville.  I have to believe that team will be coming to LA eventually.

Re: Luck looking good against LA Jaguars - Hank 91 - 11-08-2012

This was the first full NFL game I've watched in ages, and it was well worth it. Not only was Andrew great, the announcers, particularly Mike Mayock, were absolutely gushing all night long. Not surprisingly, it wasn't just about the football. At one point he scrambled eight or ten yards for a first down, and went into a slide just after getting the first. A Jacksonville defender dove to make the tackle and hit Luck just after he began the slide. It didn't appear to be a dirty play at all, just a situation where the defender is caught in no man's land -- I think he started to dive for the tackle before Luck started his slide. Regardless, he got the flag. Luck's offensive line immediately came onto the scene, looking to let the defender know this wasn't acceptable. Andrew simply popped up, but his hands in the chests of his linemen and turned them back around towards the huddle so nothing silly happened. A minute later the Jacksonville defender sought out Luck and shook his hand.

Watching Luck play in the NFL must be something close to what it feels like to have a child go off to college. I knew he couldn't stick around forever, I'm so grateful for all the memories I have of his time at Stanford, and I'm incredibly proud to watch him succeeding at the next level.

Re: Luck looking good against LA Jaguars - Bruce Wang - 11-09-2012

On my way to work I listen to Toucher & Rich (#1 rated sports talk show in Boston).  This morning they did a segment discussing Andrew Luck with I think Bert Breer of the NFL Network.  They all agreed that if the Patriots could they should trade Brady for Luck.  And they also agreed that if the Patriots drafted 1st last year, even with a healthy Brady - they should have drafted Luck and traded Brady.

I used to hate the Colts and their Cut That Meat quarterback, and I still think Irsay is a jackass.  But the guy is a passionate owner and willing to spending money.  So Luck got in a much better situation than you would typically get from a team drafting first.  I'm fully expecting Pagano's vision of them hoisting the Lombardi several times coming to fruition.

Frankly I don't understand why the ENTIRE league did not Suck For Luck.

I have discussed this with others on draftcountdown.com.  That board is filled with a lot of knowledgeable posters who know a lot about pro football and what players are worth.  The consensus is that Andrew Luck is the most valuable player in football today from an ownership perspective.  There is zero chance the Colts would trade Luck for Brady.  Brady is nearing the end of his career while Luck is just starting.  Realistically, it would take Brady, Gronkowski, Chandler Jones and probably some draft picks and even then I don't think the Colts would pull the trigger.

Thanks to my Pac-12-less DirecTV I can confirm for all of you that Luck gushing is the norm during Colts' games.

It goes something like this, "Today's game Luck and the Colts vs. X"  Then later, "We had a chance to talk with Luck this week, and wow!".  Then later, "I have to tell you this is the first time I have seen Luck play in person, and in person he is even more impressive."  Then later, "It is early, but you can tell that this is going to work."  Until this game the 4th quarter has been close, and then Luck really pours it on as everyone is dazzled by his command of the team, the playbook and the clock.

9 games into the season and a few things are clear.  First, Luck is playing much better now than week 1.  Second, the staff is willing to let Luck be Luck more now than in week 1.  Third, given that week to week improvement it is not hard at all to project Luck and the Colts in the AFC playoffs.  Fourth, given the "Chuck Strong" storyline the Colts have a lot of people that want Luck to do well.  It must be a great time to be an Indy season ticket holder.

I still remember a few weeks ago Inside the NFL had that terminally ill cancer patient who met Luck and told him, "You're the greatest football player the Colts will ever have."  It was quite the statement, and a really tearful story.  And yet, after 3 years of Luck watching I actually believe it could ultimately be true.

Look who's changing his tune. - FarmBoy - 11-09-2012

Apparently, Phil Simms is now on the Andrew Luck band wagon.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1399844-phil-simms-ranks-the-rookie-quarterbacks-in-the-nfl

He says something like "I've seen Andrew Luck throw more dynamic throws in his first game as a pro then I saw him throw in his entire career at Stanford. I find that hard to believe, or he just didn't watch much of Luck's games (seriously, a quick google would provide Simms with plays #15 and #1 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19k4DPZhO98). I do agree that he's throwing it with a bit more velocity on average than he did as a Cardinal. It just underscores that Luck was playing with handcuffs with the wide receivers available to him.

Exactly. I remember reading somewhere that Luck customized the velocity of his throw to the receiver and the pattern.  Amazing.

Re: Luck looking good against LA Jaguars Simms always - JohnOlenchalk - 11-10-2012

denigrated Stanford and Luck when he had the opportunity while Luck was still an undergrad.  Don't know what Simms' problem was, but I don't believe for a minute he saw very much of Andrew when he was jacking his jaw so negatively.  But it sounds like he's at least trying to say something positive.  I don't know what it is about Simms, but I've never much cared for his commentary work.  He, Collinsworth, and Dan Dierdorff are like fingernails on a chalkboard for me.  Give me Troy Aikman, he's at the top of the list, but there are some really good ones that we don't get to hear much like Ross Tucker, Tim Ryan, Jaws, and a few others.  Hard to find a pro game I care to watch most of the time.

Commentator teams always get me. Last year the team with Urban Meyer and Chris Spielman was so far above every other team, it was like an older kid wandering into a peewee game. I just wonder how so much talent can get concentrated on one commentary team when I have to listen to Jesse Palmer and David Pollack pollute my life.

Re: Luck looking good against LA Jaguars - Bruce Wang - 11-10-2012

They should get Charles Bark.ley to do NFL commentary. He did color once for an NBA game and by convention he was terrible. He obviously did no preparation. He was hysterical. I never laughed so hard watching a game. Unfortunately he said some things about either the Dutch or Scandanavians that he shouldn't have had and it appears that the TNT and the NBA never let him work a game again.

One time I caught Bo Schumbechler doing color for an Ohio State game.  He was so obviously biased it was hysterical. He would curse when the Buckeyes scored.  Never saw him do a game again.
