A few nuggets from Uncle Ted - FarmBoy - 11-09-2012

I'm trying to see if I can reach the end of the Internet before 5pm, so I was perusing Ted Miller's chant from yesterday. A few nuggets of interest:

Quote:Engineer Mike (Switzerland) There seems to be several scenarios that could play out to produce different teams in the Rose Bowl, etc. As a fan of the CONFERENCE, what is now the best possible overall outcome for this regular season from here on out. (Obviously, we'll root for all to win their bowl games...)

Ted Miller (3:34 PM) If you are rooting for conference super-awsomeness: 1. Oregon wins the national title; 2. Oregon State wins the Rose Bowl; 3. UCLA wins out and plays in the Pac-12 title game; 4. USC loses to UCLA but wins the rest of its games, including Notre Dame; 5. Washington wins out; 6. Arizona wins out (sorry Arizona State). By the way, the sacrificial puppy in all that is Stanford. The Cardinal's final three games: Oregon State, at Oregon at UCLA. Stanford could cause a lot of heartache over the home stretch while boosting its own Q-rating.

Jordan Poyer (Corvallis) The Rose takes a 10-2 OSU team over an undefeated Notre Dame? C'mon Ted, they're traditionalists!

Ted Miller (3:44 PM) Again... if the SEC has the No. 1 team, the Sugar Bowl, which will lose the SEC champ, gets first pick. I'm almost certain the Sugar Bowl would immediately grab undefeated Notre Dame and then hope to match it opposite an SEC team. If the Rose Bowl has a shot at an undefeated ND, they might take it.... but the Rose Bowl has a strong relationship with its Pac-12/Big Ten partners....It further plays into things that Oregon State hasn't played in a Rose Bowl since 1965... Larry Scott & Co would put up a BIG push to get the Beavers to Pasadena at 10-2.

The first one was interesting in passing to consider that someone thinks that Stanford losing out is the best case for the the conference.

But the second topic makes me more hopeful about BSC possibilities for Stanford. Should we beat OSU and UCLA, but lose to Oregon respectably, would we be in the op 14 BCS final standings? And would a 9-3 Stanford be attractive to the Rose Bowl, assuming Notre Dame is gone? Or would the RB take the other SEC team available that the Sugar didn't take?

I'll remain hopeful until we lose to a team not named Oregon.

The other wrinkle, in terms of who the Pac-12 would pick if Stanford beats OSU, loses to Oregon, and beats UCLA, is that Stanford will have beaten all of the likely candidates to replace Oregon in the Rose Bowl ('SC, UCLA, Oregon State).  So even though OSU would end up with only two losses, should they get in over a team that beat every good/ranked team in the conference save Oregon?

A similar scenario played out 5 years ago.  The Rose Bowl had the Pac 10 champs USC but had lost Ohio State to the NC game.  They chose as a replacement a 9-3 Illinois team which was 13th in the BCS while bypassing higher ranked teams.  I think the Rose Bowl will always try to match Big 10 and Pac 12 if they have a choice.

OSU would have three losses if Oregon is in the BCS CG.  (Washington, Stanford, and Oregon at home).  Stanford would have three better losses (Washington on the road, Oregon on the road, and Notre Dame on the road.)

2 conference loss Stanford would have the fewest conference losses, a better or equivalent overall record, and wins over all other viable Pac-12 options.  FWIW - It will not matter because in this scenario the others (Oregon State, UCLA, USC & ASU) are unlikely to finish in the BCS 14 so they would not be selection options for the Rose Bowl.

Also, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the Rose Bowl commissioner already said this year that they would take a Pac-12 team to replace Oregon (if they made the NC) if one is eligible for a BCS at large spot.  I would not worry at all about the Rose Bowl taking a non-Big-10 or Pac-12 team if they don't have to.  We just have to hope we end in the top-14...

This will be a whole lot more likely if we win tomorrow. Bury the Beavers!
