At least to this fan who commented on K.al honk John Crumpacker's update of Tedford's status for the Chron:

"Today's Chronicle sums it up--an article on yet another sexual scandal by the Catholic Church, and Ca.l getting the living crap beaten out of them by Oregon State. Some things will never change, because you have to want to change. Neither the Church, or Ca.l, have the willingness (at least at this point) to address the real problems. It's about the character of the people that you recruit to be part of your organization. Get people who are at their essence good, and who will do their best because that's WHO THEY ARE, and you have gone a long way towards improving your situation. Refuse to do this, and you have a good explanation as to why people stop going to church or to Ca.l games.

One of the most hilarious parts of this process are 59er fans getting all-hoity-toity and declaring themselves above such reasonably good candidates as MacIntyre (SJSU). They seem to have coalesced behind Petersen and Franklin of Vandy, which is LOL-worthy in presumption. Yeah, it'd be great -- and the AD has to at least call -- but for a job with such a mediocre history, in a solid but not overwhelming recruiting region, to presume you'll do much better than a Taggart or MacIntyre is pretty hilarious.

Vandy's game last night was JUST like our upset win at U.SC.  Eery parallels. Small(ish) private university, the only one in the conference.  LONG stretches of wretched football over the years, punctuated by a few seasons of hope and fewer of real wins.  Loss after loss after gawdawful loss after loss after inept loss after loss... to hated state rival Tennessee.  And Franklin comes in and changes the culture.  Recruits, get this,  "tougher players...football players".

Question:  Will Franklin ditch a place where he won his elevation to the Pantheon of the Gods for C.al's Porta-potti Memorial Stadium where the fans are front-runners and the only decent pay raise they can give him is heavily skewed to performance incentives because they can't afford the money up front?

Anybody who would leave a delightful place like Vandy in a fun town like Nashville for Berkeley is a lot less smart than I think Vandy's coach is.

Actually, I'd be shocked if UC-East Bay could give Franklin a raise, even discounting buyout issues (for T.edford and Franklin both) If the internet's correct, Franklin's making $3MM a year. And of course Vandy's got SEC money to give him a raise if they want. So no raise and high cost of living. Yeah, right, dreamland.

One other hilarious add: the other popular choice for fans appears to be Ron Rivera, who's currently looking passive and disorganized as the panthers coach in the NFL. Should be perfectly set up then!

Any chance we could get John Arrillaga to contribute substantial $$$ to the Memorial Stadium fund conditioned upon k.al agreeing to KEEP T.edford for another five years?  Seems like a win/win scenario to me...

In unrelated news, an anonymous donor conditionally pledged $xxx million to the kal athletic department to cover the remainder of all obligations incurred by the stadium renovation and SHPRC project...

Easy.  The same way people behind on their mortgage can afford a big, new flatscreen TV.  They say,  "Screw it." and put it on the credit card.  At least they can watch programs now in mind-blowing HD and maybe they'll win the lottery before it all comes down around them.

And... the buyout will be small, the performance incentives many and tied to increases in revenue (attendance).  Would you take that deal?

I dunno, man, I'd say be careful what you wish for. This season he seems to be doing better with the Hawks (then again, home wins against NFL royalty like Dallas, Green Bay, and the Pats will color perspectives moreso than wins over Carolina, Minnesota, and the Jets) but Pete Carroll's NFL career has been decidedly mediocre. Same thing for Lou Holtz.

Certainly not saying that Ron Rivera will have the collegiate success of either of those former NFL flameouts but Rivera's defensive acumen isn't really in question and I'd hate to see him bring that knowledge back to his old stomping grounds in the People's Republic.
