Kirk Herbstreit giving us a LOT of love on the countdown show.

Pretty incredible to see us ahead of Texas A&M and FSU, the computers must love us.

Not necessarily surprising once you look at the previous rankings: lost to #25 and #1, beat #5, #15, #24. Well, that's the FSU explanation at least (they've lost to highly mediocre NC State, only quality win is Clemson. Second-best win is...Duke?...which is our fifth-best win, probably.)

Most impressive part of this season is going 9-3/10-2 against sagarin's 7th-ranked schedule.

The poll voters still don't respect Stanford as much as LSU or Texas A&M.  I think if voters realized they lost their two games by a combined 11 points with a QB that was since replaced, including one in OT at the now #1 team's place, Stanford would get more love. 

I mean if Stanford is #11 in the polls and #8 in the computers, Stanford must be in the Top 4 in the computers.  Does anyone know where exactly Stanford is in the computer rankings?

We're #5 in the computers on average, behind ND, Florida, Bama, and K-State, and ahead of Georgia, Oregon, and LSU.

Now, if ND loses to SC, Florida loses to FSU, Bama loses to Auburn, Georgia Tech loses to Georgia, K-State loses to Texas....

Wow, that's awesome.  I thought we'd deserve to be in the top 10, and I'm gratified to see validation.  I still think Georgia and Florida are overrated though.

We're #5 in the average BCS computer rankings. It goes ND, Florida, Bama, KSU, then us (then Georgia and Oregon). If you look at the individual computer rankings, we are as high as #4 and as low as #8.

a LOT.  We'd crush them.  And maybe finally, we'd earn some national respect.  I'm hearing things about Oregon being overrated now...psh.  Those people weren't saying the same thing about Alabama last week, and the voters certainly didn't either.

Also, see recency bias with a touch of $EC bias flavoring.  Oregon loses to a really good Stanford team but is still ranked lower than Alabama, who lost resoundingly to a Texas A&M team not as good as Stanford.  Don't lose last.  And if you want a Voldemort, get flashy building up to December, because consistency and early season results don't mean a thing.  Stepfan Taylor probably isn't in the running for Voldemort runner-up anymore, is he?  I mean, Collin Klein and Kenjon Barner are surely out of it now, right?

Interesting to see how close Oregon and Florida are in the "if N.D. loses to $C" position.  Looks to me like Oregon has the inside track.  FL would gain a spot in one poll with a win over FSU, but Oregon would make up enough computer ground with the OSU win to close the small gap. Close though.

Imagine the following

likely events:
Stanford stomps UCLA, UCLA, top-10 Nebraska
GA loses to AL
FSU loses to FL (or ACC title game)

not-so-likely events:
ND loses to the team Under Stanford Control and BCS game
OSU loses to MI
Oregon beats AL in Miami
FL loses Sugar Bowl to OK (or to FSU + FSU loses ACC or Orange Bowl)
LSU, K ST and A&M lose either reg. season or bowl game (these may not even be necessary)


If all that happens, the AP would probably have to finish with Oregon and Stanford as the top 2. How do they not give us a split national title?!?!

When Rece Davis unveiled Stanford in the #8 slot, he said, "I don't think Stanford cares what they're rated, they know they can go to the Rose Bowl."

I know that too, but I care an awful lot about the ranking. Number eight!!!

I'm not a marketing guy, but I figure being in the top ten means high school players see our name and logo more often on ESPN graphics.  And maybe even a few casual fans in the bay area who might buy tickets.

Speaking of good (regional) marketing, the Washington Post has had quite a few Kevin Hogan stories. Certainly can't hurt exposure in what should be an excellent market for us, recruiting-wise.

(Well, then again -- already is: Reynolds, Carter, Stephens and Hogan are all more-or-less from the area.)
