Players don't get called to meetings that announce their coach is staying.

He's gone according to multiple sources.

Tedford firing ALMOST gospel truth on Bear Insider - Redrum - 11-20-2012

Sac Bee, CBS sports, and lots of "insider" scoops to Bear Insiders ( aren't they all, by definition, "insiders"?) that contrary to "Stand-Down Monday",  we have "Tedford Gone Tuesday."

Won't be long before a kid on the team tweets the real score.

AP source: California fires coach Jeff Tedford
By JOSH DUBOW (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- A person with knowledge of the decision says California has fired coach Jeff Tedford after his worst season in 11 years with the Golden Bears.
The decision will be announced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon, the person said on condition of anonymity because the announcement hadn't been made.

Welp.  Guess we'll see kal's AD budget go red for another decade or so...

That's really a shame.

Re: Jeff the UC system's highest paid employee Relieved of Duties as Football Coach - Kathy - 11-20-2012

That's too bad. I kind of liked having Tedford in the East Bay, mucking up things for the weenies. Question is, how much money does Cal have to find a replacement? Or did it cost too much to buy out JT's contract?

Is Sandy Barbour next on the list?

#Stanford coach David Shaw on news of #Cal coach Jeff Tedford's firing: "His record speaks for itself. It's a sad day and a harsh business."

Absolutely agree - Tedford is a great coach that really loved Cal. My brother told me that after their last home game, he came back out to thank the student section. Sadly - it was a pretty empty student section.

Rivalry aside, what he did at Cal was unbelievable - hope their fans recognize that.

Hm - I see it auto-subs the school name with "School with the lowest graduation rate." While I'm happy to belittle them usually - I actually was using their school name in this case.

^That's the auto-replacement software.  Kinda like Cockney rhyming slang...tribal knowledge and whatnot.  Some people have recently spoken against it.

Few thoughts...
* I guess Jeff will still be the UC's highest paid employee until he gets another job.  I would imagine he will want a new opportunity, and will get one.  So his days with this current auto-correct are numbered.  I guess it won't matter because now that he is not a Pac-12 coach few on this board will write about his activities.

* UCB's job is less desirable than UCLA's, so UCB will need to pay big money to get a quality coach into that situation.  If UCB is really wants to win that new coach will likely become "UC's highest paid" though Mora might still take the title.

* I also am eager to see the big name dreams of the UCB community get crushed by reality.

* The lack of a coach is going to ruin their 2013 recruiting, though I don't think many of their verbals are highly desired by other Pac-12 schools.

Academics are important, and likely will help justify some contractual clause related to compensation down the road.  It also puts a good spin on the situation because really Jeff has had only this one sub-par year on the field.

The best part of the release was the Stanford reference related to graduation rates.  UCB is last, Stanford is first.  YOU KNOW!

Over the last 12 months or so it has become clear that UC administrators know, and are increasingly willing to state, that the best AD in the Pac-12 on almost every front is Stanford.

I thought all those Director's Cups meant Stanford has the best AD in the country.  8)

Lots of wrong assumptions here.

California is now a desirable job.  It has great facilities (better than UCLA, including an on campus facility) and has proven it can have great fan support.  Stanford's success even proves it can be done at a school that values academic performance.

California will have to pay whatever market rate is for their coach, no premium price because it's California.

You don't fire a coach making nearly $3 million, spend heavily and be reliant on the football program to generate revenue to fund the athletic department, and then pinch pennies when it comes to hiring a new coach.  California will land a fine head coach and the fans won't be crushed.

California's recruiting class is currently pretty weak.  A new head coach with credibility who can get started quickly has a realistic chance to have a better class than Tedford would have pulled had he stayed in place.

I bet they go after Roman, which would set up some very, very interesting Big Games. Then again, I'd guess Harbaugh would make it a headache for that match to happen.

I'm not saying they won't be able to hire a coach, but the idea that the Jon Grudens and Chris Petersens of the world are going to drop everything to fill out a 59er application -- an idea widely shared on their message boards -- is ludicrous. Their best hope is to latch onto a Harbaugh, a capable guy coaching someplace small and/or unheralded. I'd be talking to that San Jose State fellow if I were them.

I know California and Stanford people make it a sport to put down and not take seriously the other, but Bruce Feldman reports Petersen is interested in two jobs: Oregon and California.

Berkeley makes a lot of sense for Petersen because he's from Yuba City and visits his dad there a lot apparently.  Plus, he started his career coaching at UC Davis, so he has ties to UC in his past.  I know the idea of Chris Petersen at California may not be a pleasant thought for Stanford fans, but it should be, because California and Stanford both benefit when the other is good in football.

Roman's a tough candidate to wish for because of the mismatch between college and pros. The Niners are probably the best team in the NFC and could play into February. You simply can't wait that long to hire a coach for college.

No mention of Charlie Strong who was also interviewed when Tedford was hired.  Strong has done well at Louisville.  You expect that he will be pursued for higher profile HC jobs though Arkansas seems most likely.

Re: the Pac-12 school with the lowest football graduation rate team called for mandatory 10 am meeti - washingtonismoney - 11-20-2012

Doubt Charlie Strong -- Louisville's prepared to pay him the big bucks, apparently, and Strong's a southern guy. But possible, I suppose.

I'm surprised that money is dismissed as a factor here. This is a school that found it didn't have enough money to pay Lupoi last year; they're going to be able to trump a BCS AQ coach's salary while paying T.edford? (For that matter, Petersen, who's paid like a BCS coach -- $2.5 million, I think.) Seems unlikely to me. I would be surprised if it weren't coordinator/mid-major type. But who knows; I'm really wrong about these sorts of things.

(No one is allowed to find those posts where I LOLed at the Jim Mora hiring. OTOH, feel free to keep my pro-Rich Rodriguez posts in mind. .500 ain't so bad, I think.)
