A team built on a foundation of 2 & 3 Star recruits -
Griffins78 - 11-21-2012
As much as we've grown excited about competing and signing increingly more 4 & 5 star recruits, I was struck by the number of players having a major impact that were 2 & 3 star recruits. I think it is a reflection of: good recruiting - seeing things or potential others don't, good coaching - helping an athlete significantly improve and exceed expectation, and the imperfection of ratings.
Here is my list of 2 & 3 star recruits that have been major contributors this year:
Daniel Zychlinski 2 - 2008
Alex Debniak 2 - 2008
Terrence Brown 2 - 2009
Ben Gardner 2 - 2009
Ed Reynolds 2 - 2010
David Parry walk on - 2010
Sam Schwartzstein 3 - 2008
Chase Thomas 3 - 2008
Khalil Wilkes 3 - 2009
Drew Terrell 3 - 2009
Ryan Hewitt 3 - 2009
Josh Mauro 3 - 2009
Trent Murphy 3 - 2009
Kevin Danser 3 - 2009
Jarek Lancaster 3 - 2009
AJ Tarpley 3 - 2010
David Yankey 3 - 2010
Cameron Fleming 3 - 2010
Henry Anderson 3 - 2010
Barry Browning 3 - 2010
Jordan Richards 3 - 2011

To be honest, the biggest change in the rating of the players we are recruiting is probably the respect that the Stanford football program currently has. Most of the players listed with three stars on griffin's list would likely be elevated to 4 stars if we were recruiting them now as a result of our interest in them. Also, I remember Jordan Richards being listed as at least a 4-star "Athlete".

What a list. A few decades of recruiting these kinds of 2- and 3-star recruits and we're set for a few Stanford football dynasties :)

I was surprised to see Henry Anderson's name on that list. I wonder if one of the other outfits had him as a 4-star. At any rate, his list of offers on Rivals is pretty impressive (several SEC, Florida St, Clemson, Michigan) and I read U.SC wanted him too (although not listed on his Rivals profile).
