Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - washingtonismoney - 12-01-2012

Utah State's Gary Andersen -- owner of a 10-2 record this year (and a long stint as DC of Utah, serving under Urban and Whittingham) -- has decided to stick with the Aggies.

Supposedly NC State is hiring Dave Doeren, the coach of Northern Illinois and the owner of a not-too-shabby 23-4 record.

Don't worry though, Barbour's got this all under control.

There are some rumblings that Petersen is interested in the California job.

I'd happily take him or Mike MacIntyre, who also is a possibility.  Barbour is going to make a great hire, no matter who it is.  She has a strong record in that department.

But great will be expensive.  They will need to find $2.5-$3 million for a great coach and $2 million for his staff.  I am sure they can find the money, but the question that will never get asked is what worthy project went unfunded because those donors annual gifting dollars were depleted by football staff salary donations.

FWIW - I hope MacIntyre gets a nice job in the SEC or Big12.  To get SJSU to 10-2 is a miracle and I do not want his miracle working craft to be in the Pac-12.

I think MacIntyre will stay a year and test the waters. If he is successful again, he'll bolt. If not, he'll stay. Either way, SJSU is interesting.

I'm not sure if MacIntyre will ever be a hotter commodity than right now.  If he gets the right offer, I think he has to take it.  As your post notes, there's always a possibility that the team stumbles next year (injuries, suspensions, etc, can derail a program).  If that happens, he would regret having passed up a great opportunity.

The rumor is that Kal is interviewing Darrell Hazell of Kent State.

He could be a really, really solid hire. The thing is, other than his stint as receivers coach at Ohio State, he hasn't stayed long at any position.

I love the idea that UCB is in the running for a coach that NC State passed on and that they are unable to attract a coach at Utah State.  Seems now that their best bets are with the Kent State and Louisiana Tech coaches.  I guess we will see, but I sure hope UCB is not planning on paying those types of guys $3+ million per year.

Buddy had the first winning record of his head coaching career (I think) at Dartmouth. He's hot!

Re: Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - washingtonismoney - 12-02-2012

There's a coach out there. Tanned, rested, ready. Has a reputation as a fixer-upper. Has a strong, .590 record in a BCS conference at a historically so-so school. Five top-25 finishes.

kal, I HAVE THE COACH FOR YOU: http://goo.gl/erxAo

Sonny Dykes of Louisiana Tech the clubhouse leader? http://www.mercurynews.com/cal-bears/ci_22110833/cal-reportedly-talking-kent-state-football-coach-darrell

(La. Tech AD is quoted in article that he's waiting to see if Dykes goes 59erin'. If that comes to pass, Mason and company's number one offseason priority has to be figuring out how to stop the Airraid/short passing stuff.)

Re: Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - fullmetal - 12-03-2012

Mason would have had to deal with that anyway since we should assume Mike Leach's squad next year comes back ready to compete.  Those of us from Big 12 country know what happens to teams who underestimate Leach's offenses.

Re: Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - OutsiderFan - 12-03-2012

Diaco is the only assistant to have never been a head coach on Cal's final list, according to the publisher of Bear Territory.  Given Barbour came from Notre Dame and knows their people well, Diaco is a real possibility.

I read he's the top candidate at BC, but California is a better job than Boston College.  We'll see.

In order of preference for my liking:

1. Petersen
2. Diaco
3. MacIntyre
4. Hazell
5. Dykes

One bright spot...or at least slightly luminescent spot - Redrum - 12-03-2012

If ever there were a time that a Stanford secondary could deal with plethora of spread /quick passing offenses,  this is it.  Finally, some talent that might be able to handle the pressure.

Re: Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - jayasena - 12-03-2012

Last year, I hypothesized that Oregon's biggest weapon (although by no means the only one) was that they were different from everyone else in the conference (as evidenced by their difficulties in beating good opponents who have more than a week to prepare for them). And that the hiring of Rich Rod, Leach et.al. will dilute that advantage in the long-term. I realize they each run a different flavor of the spread, but it still alters the amount of effort and time teams are willing to put in to preparing to defend the spread in general when not doing so could lead to 3-4 losses instead of just 1.

It's still too early to tell if the hypothesis is correct but, along those lines, I'm fine with more spread. In fact, I'd be fine with the entire conference going to spread offenses and us sticking with smash-mouth, old-school football. Then we'll have the advantage of being the odd offense that most teams in the conference won't bother to prepare for!

Re: Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - Farm93 - 12-03-2012

I thought Arizona really helped Stanford deal with Oregon.  And I am confident that Oregon helped Stanford deal with UCLA in the Rose Bowl 7 days later.

As I watched UCLA's version in the Rose Bowl a couple of weeks ago, I realized that Oregon must hate these copies of their system.  No one is doing it as well as Oregon, but it has to hurt Oregon that teams in the conference must prepare for a similar style 3 to 5 times a year.

Re: Coaches going off the board for the 59ers - washingtonismoney - 12-03-2012

The Pac-12, going forward, will probably be the toughest conference to build an elite defense in. There are tradition factors, for one -- we like the offense on the West Coast. But, more specifically, it's the variety of systems: we run a relatively Cro-Magnon pro-style offense; UW and U.S.C. run relatively more high-flying styles; Oregon, ASU and Arizona are spread-to-run outfits; UCLA likes to pass more than the preceding three but isn't as pass-happy as WSU and kal (assuming Sonny Dykes is the guy).

The variety of personnel necessary to defend all of these offensive systems is pretty wide-ranging. You basically need a Usua Amanam (or two) versus the pass-happy guys, but then Amanam might barely play a role against UW. Whereas in the SEC is relatively straightforward -- pro-style nearly all the way. No wonder A&M had a ton of success -- it was like introducing the rabbit to Australia.

I assume you don't mean this Hazell.

It would certainly help recruiting.
