Tyler Eifert has won the Mackey Award, given to the nation's top tight end.
Eifert: 44 receptions, 624 yards, 4 TDs.
Ertz: 66 receptions, 837 yards, 6 TDs, including brobdingnagian TDs vs. Oregon State, Oregon, and SC.

FWIW, both Kiper and McShay (ESPN's NFL draft "gurus"), have Ertz going in the first round, ahead of Eiffert.
Well, maybe NFL will even things up twixt Ertz and Eiffert - Redrum - 02-07-2013
It would be sweet revenge for Ertz to be picked earlier than Eiffert. No trophy, but maybe a cool $100 thou a year difference if Ertz is picked earlier. But maybe Eiffert can hock his Mackey Award to make up the difference.  Or not. Eiffert might go first, depends on whether the teams picking need a TE and whether they want a bigger blocking body or a better receiver. NFL tight ends some of lowest paid players. Still, more than I make on a yearly basis.

After Gronk's success with the Pats, I suspect agents will push hard to get better contracts for TEs, esp if they're drafted with the intent to use them as receivers. Last big draft board I saw had Ertz ranked 29th.

Can somebody explain why TEs are on the lower end of the payscale? They've emerged as such important weapons in today's offenses, and it would seem to me that the supply of players that can block, run a route, and catch a ball is smaller.

Kiper has Ertz going #19 based on the Giant's need for better TE play. Honestly, seems a bit high to me for a high quality TE who isn't seen as having other-worldly potential like I recall being expected from Gronk. But more power to him him if it gets done.

My guess is that the contracts lag schematic utilization. Players sign multi-year deals that lock in the numbers, but only recently have coaches started seeing the light. In fact, only a few teams really fully use a pass-catching tight end like Gronk, mainly because it's hard to find a big body with enough speed. (Pats, Saints rely on the flex TE. Everyone else generally has a different primary offensive identity--Saints were banged up this year and had to lean on Graham, but Payton/Brees use Graham as a fourth WR. Not sure about Atlanta since they have Jones and White.)
Looking at the top 25 fantasy TEs this last season (yes, I know Rob broke his arm), there was a clear difference in trend between the top six TEs and the rest of the field based on receptions. For total receiving yardage, it was a steady trend from first to last. And for TDs, it was also kind of a linear trend. Gronkowski leads all TEs with 11 TDs, but it was Jason Witten who topped the field for both receptions and yardage. Witten only had 3 TDs to show for that, however. The highest fantasy scoring TE was Tony Gonzalez, followed by Jimmy Graham, Witten, Heath Miller, and Gronkowski. There was a visible drop-off in fantasy points scored between #3 and #4.
Salaries
Gonzalez - 16 yrs - $5.9 mil
Graham - 3 yrs - $706,285
Witten - 10 yrs - $7.141 mil
Miller - 8 yrs - $7.07 mil
Gronk - 3 yrs - $2.61 mil
Clearly Jimmy Graham's agent has some catching up to do. And I do think it's more interesting to look at the high-performing TEs' salaries rather than just the league-average TE salary.

According to Scout.com:
Quote:The Indianapolis Colts have signed second-round tight end Coby Fleener to a four-year, $5.341 million dal that includes a $2.324 million signing bonus.
The deal includes guaranteed base salaries of $390,000 and $632,802 with non-guaranteed base salaries of $875,604 and $1.118 million.
Of his 2014 base salary of $875,604, $420,000 is fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap.
That's probably about the max any rookie tight end is going to get, plus inflation, under the new CBA.
