MacIntyre to Boulder -
washingtonismoney - 12-10-2012
He's been hired by Colorado. Considering what an epic omnishambles their coaching firing/search was, a surprisingly good hire for the Buffs. Moves MacIntyre off the 2013 and 2014 schedules, which is nice-ish, I suppose. Too bad for SJSU. (And keep your hands off our staff.) (But feel free to raid other Pac-12 schools and/or N.D.)

Excellent hire for Colorado. If MacIntyre can turn around the mess that was SJS, turning around the Buffs will be a breeze.
Now, will Sparta stay relevant?
Those poor bastards in San Jose - Redrum - 12-10-2012
For once-- in the case of San Jose State-- I agreed with the Sheer-Mass Mindspace Theory, by which the more successful college football being played in an overcrowded pro sports market, the better it is for
every college football fan. I feel for them and maybe, in a couple of years, I'll feel for us if MacIntyre really does have the mojo to turn Colorado around.

Once upon a time, and not too long ago, the Buffs were very relevant in football. I am sure there is enough support on that campus to make them very good. I would have to think Colorado is a better place than UCB. History, resources and community support are all there. I wonder if he actually told UCB no? Hmmm...
SJSU? I know some current students there, and they really don't follow SJSU football even now. That community just is not that passionate about their school and/or that team. It is very hard for me to believe that SJSU will be great for more than a lucky year or two every once and a while. At least, SJSU is a good coaching job because it puts you into the Cali recruiting circuits, and THAT is valued by bigger programs in the Rockies and the West.

Sadly, the answer to your question is no - California (i.e., Barbour) did not make an offer to Mac. Instead she was bowled over immediately by D.ykes and never seriously considered any other candidates. I would have preferred Mac but c'est la vie...
As far as CU is concerned, Mac has his work cut out for him. Their facilities are the worst in the P12. It is going to be interesting to see if he can get quality recruits to come to Boulder...

A risky decision for MacIntyre. While I think Taggart made an awful move to choose USF when he's young enough to wait around for a job with real potential, MacIntyre is 47, so there's a little more urgency if the goal is to get a really big-time job.
I can't root for him, though. Stanford has had pretty good success with Colorado's decline, getting Hemschoot, Brendon Austin and Dillon Bonnell out of there recently.
I always root for San Jose State to be good, so I hope they find a worthy replacement.

I don't see why USF is seen as a bad job. Their first coach, Jim Leavitt, didn't get fired for incompetence but rather alleged abuse. Before that, he was seen as a hot property, coaching-wise. They then made the mistake of hiring Skip Holtz, but making one bad hire doesn't taint the job.
You've got a good recruiting area in a soft conference. Seems like a very solid choice to me.

If USF gets an invite into the ACC, that would change my perspective.
I just don't see a Big East team that's now facing a recruiting rival on a suddenly level playing field (UCF, which is joining the Big East) as a good job in 2013.
Leavitt had success when Miami and FSU were both down, and even then, he never won 10 games.
And Petrino has found work... -

Filling the vacuum left by Willie Taggart:

And his younger brother, Paul, who provided the offense at Arkansas, has come out of the shadows to take over at Idaho. Much as I dislike him (from prior experience), I hope he can re-vamp the Vandals.

Without getting too specific, I've been a part of the SJSU community for decades now, and your conclusion is exactly what many SJSU faculty and students have also concluded. The SJSU Academic Senate has twice voted to recommend leaving football behind.Â
Unlike Fresno or Boise State which are literally "the only game in town," SJSU will always have to compete with two pro teams and two Pac12 teams for casual fans--meaning its fan base has to be almost exclusively composed of alums. And while SJSU has many more alumni than Stanford, the demography of SJSU students has radically changed over the years to groups that tend not to be deeply interested in American football. Worse, SJSU alumni tend not to be as well-off as Stanford alumni, and cannot support the program to the degree that the Arrillagas of the world can for Stanford. When a BIG home game draws 15k you know you are dealing with a program that cannot be fiscally viable in the long run.
This year proves that given the right combination of university subsidies, a creative head coach, and some key players--that SJSU can have a great year. I am highly skeptical that it will be able to sustain this success over the long haul without an unacceptable drain on public dollars.
One thing I will say--SJSU has dramatically improved the academic standards of its football team ever since it hired Tom Bowen, who sadly departed. Bowen is regarded as something of a genius down here and deserves as much credit, in my opinion, for the football team's success than McIntyre. Bowen took a program that was bleeding scholarships so fast that SJSU threatened to become a major casualty of the new APR system, but he installed serious academic standards. By the time McIntyre was hired SJSU was on the verge of getting its full complement of scholarships back--the stage had been set by Bowen and Tolbert in the study halls.
And who does SJSU have to thank for Tom Bowen? Bill Walsh.

Since Stanford has played Colorado and Arizona the past two years, do we play ASU and Utah the next two, or is the rotation not that simple?
Re: MacIntyre to Boulder -
FarmBoy - 12-10-2012
TreeWeird - yes, we now play ASU and Utah for the next two years. We won't play Colorado again until 2015, unless we meet in the CCG. Colorado could be much improved over that time.

Does inclusion in the Mountain West do anything to raise SJSU's football prospects?
I hope so.

Wilner throws out a ton of names to replace Mac, mentions (naturally) Derek Mason. I hope they realize how well not hiring a Stanford coordinator worked out for them the last time around and repeat themselves this time (Shaw, actually, interviewed for the job).

Did you notice who is coaching SJS in their bowl game? Kent Baer. Wasn't he the Stanford DC the last time we played in the Rose Bowl?

He also coached the defense across the Bay when Pawlousy and Mouth 1.0 were there.
(BTW, before he even enrolled, Mouth 2.0 bragged to Alex Carter that he would bring back the Axe all four years. oops.)

Colorado is buttressing the hire with a financial investment.
