Memories of Andy Buh? - OutsiderFan - 12-16-2012

There is a report out saying Andy Buh, former Stanford Assistant, and most recently LB coach at Wisconsin, is going to become the Defensive Coordinator at California.

Do you guys have any opinions on him as a coach or recruiter?  My recollection is Stanford ran a 4-3 defense under him, switched to a 3-4 with Fangio, and has been improving on defense ever since.  Is this because Buh wasn't good, or do y'all think Stanford simply lacked the players it has been recruiting the last several years, to be that good on defense when Buh was at Stanford?  He was hired by Harbs IIRC, so that has to be a positive I would imagine.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Well a great looking wife.  :P.

Being not as good as Fangio certainly isn't a disgrace.

Bielema wanted him to go to Arkansas with him but he was swayed by the opportunity to return to Berkeley where he was an Admin Asst in the Holmoe era.  That is the connection that brought him back to Berkeley (he worked for Lyle Setencich at California and Setencich and D.ykes are good friends).

This is anecdotal, but carries some weight.  Manti Te'o had Stanford as one of his final four schools late in the recruiting season of 2008.  The other offers he was entertaining were ND, U.S.C, and BYU (he's Mormon).  He had done a video I saw  on one recruiting site - he talked about his visit to Stanford and he was very specific when he said, "I really like Coach Buh."  You have to take into account the context - in late 2008, Stanford had finished the season 5-7.  This was before Toby Gerhart had his monster Voldemort runner up season the following year, before we knew who Andrew Luck was, before Stanford had its third straight BCS bowl invitation.  In short, to land Te'o given the rep of Stanford football at the time would have been a h.uge recruiting coup.

Has a rep as a good recruiter, as Embo notes.

As a coach at Stanford? Didn't seem terrible, didn't seem too wonderful either. I seem to remember some preseason articles suggesting the 2008 and 9 defenses would be surprisingly good; instead, they were pretty bad.

I would've been much more excited -- were I a C.al fan -- if Dave Aranda from Utah State were hired. Especially since it wouldn't entail a formation change (to my knowledge, Buh has exclusively coached in 4-3 defenses.)
