He took over the San Diego job after Harbaugh left for Stanford. He went 44-22 for a .667 winning percentage (as compared to Harbaugh's 29-6 for .828). Doesn't seem like the most intimidating hire ever, but what do I know? Good luck to the Spartans, except for the opening game of the season.

With all of that FBS AQ experience he seems certain to leave if he is successful, but looks like a decent hire for SJSU.  Lived in the area, played in the Pac-10, coached in the SEC, etc.  That stuff probably sounds good to 2 star recruits still willing to chase the dream of the NFL.

I'd have been more impressed if they had hired Jamie Carragher.

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - terry - 12-17-2012

Ron Caragher's background --

Attended Bellarmine College Prep in San Jose
Played at UCLA, where he was a back-up QB (1986-89)

1994-1995  UCLA, Graduate Assistant
1996-2002  UCLA, WR coach
2003-2006  Kentucky, RB coach
2007-2012  San Diego, head coach

San Diego's record under Caragher:

2007  9-2
2008  9-2
2009  4-7
2010  5-6
2011  9-2
2012  8-3
Total 44-22

In the two seasons before Caragher took over as coach, San Diego went 11-1, 11-1 under Harbaugh.

You want them deciphering a Scouse accent? I think that's child abuse in many states.

I'm impressed!

Jamie Carragher actually wouldn't be a bad fit...staunch mediocrity in the face of supporters who call for a return to glory days that never really existed. The England national team and SJSU have quite a bit in common!

...sorry Yvonne!

N.D. was the closest comp for England for ages, until the Irish decided to go 12-0 this year.

Not bad, but at least ND used to be a dominant team back in the day. Maybe Argentina? Had a good run in the 70s and 80s, but now despite being favorites at the start of every season/tournament, inevitably are less than the sum of their parts and flame out early.

So, exactly how many stars are on the American national strip?

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - dabigv13 - 12-17-2012

Yvonne you know I'm a supporter of gli Azzurri! I'm having a tough time thinking of a good college football equivalent for them...something that combines outstanding defense with match fixing, and being one of the winningest teams in terms of championships yet perennially underrated at the beginning of tournaments even by their own fans.

Spain reminds me of Oregon. Historically disappointing, but dominant of late. Offensive juggernaut defined by speed and lateral movement.

The US is a scrappy team, not a whole lot of flair or creativity but workmanlike and sometime able to get results in the face of superior talent. Not a historically good team, but better recently. Wisconsin?

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - yvonne - 12-17-2012

I would equate the Americans to one of the non-AQ teams that has managed to crack the top 10. The problem is most of them are more flashy and gimmicky.

Let's see, Italy = USC?

Germany = ??? Alabama?

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - washingtonismoney - 12-17-2012

I think USMNT = ....Stanford. Or possibly Uruguay = Stanford. Not sure. I like the USMNT = Stanford because then U.S.C. = Mexico.

The reason for the ND = England comparison is that both have rather elevated views about their historical and present importance relative to performance. Also both have had memorable failures as coaches -- which you can't say about other power programs. Who among us really remembers Ted Tollner and Bill Callahan? Who among us remembers Charlie Weis and/or the Wally w/ a Brolly? Exactly.

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - dabigv13 - 12-17-2012

Yeah so that made me throw up in my mouth a little.

I say Stanford = Uruguay...easily the smallest country to ever win a World Cup, a power many many decades ago back when the sport was first starting to grow, wandered in the darkness for a while, but now a major player once more. Direct, but with a bit of panache.

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - yvonne - 12-17-2012

I'd like to equate Stanford with Uruguay except that Uruguay won the first World Cup. I'm not sure Stanford was instrumental in college football's development the way Uruguay was. After that first Rose Bowl, Stanford disappeared until the 1930s.

The US is a tough one. It's big and always had the resources to field a good side, but chose not to, and is now just on the outside of the great powers, kind of like a team that goes to a bowl, but never a great one. (hmm...)

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - terry - 12-17-2012

Stanford won the national championship in 1926.

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - yvonne - 12-17-2012

That was a full 24 years after the first Rose Bowl.

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - terry - 12-17-2012

I would not say Stanford disappeared until the 1930s. Stanford dropped football from 1906 through 1918, so there were no football achievements in those years. But Stanford was tremendously successful in the 1920s. Under coach Pop Warner, Stanford won three conference championships (1924, 1926, 1927) and appeared in three Rose Bowls. Stanford won the national championship in 1926. Stanford won the Rose Bowl in 1927. Ernie Nevers (1923-25) was one of the greatest players of his era. Stanford really should make a much bigger deal over the football achievements of the 1920s, but you can find very little commemoration of that era on campus. . . .

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - yvonne - 12-17-2012

OK, so Uruguay it is! Now, win the Copa America (er, Rose Bowl)!

Re: Some dude named Rod Caragher new SJSU coach - dabigv13 - 12-17-2012

Well we did share it that year with Alabama, Michigan, Navy, and the perennial powerhouse, Lafayette (though it seems as though all those other teams were "retroactively" declared champions by various polls/predictors that came later).

In any case the 20s era of Stanford was what I was referring to when I posited the Uruguay parallel.

Would've been awesome to see that Stanford - Alabama Rose Bowl game. Also would be awesome if we still could play 7 out of 10 regular season games at home...it'd be like we were in the SEC! I suppose "Olympic Club" is about as tough a nonconference opponent as any of the FCS schools SEC teams schedule now as well.
