Flower Street in Los Angeles, 213-746-7750. My understanding is that this is reasonably close to the Stanford pep rally scheduled for 3-to-5 p.m. the day before the game. (That's in downtown LA at 800 West Olympic Boulevard.) Can you some of you Los Angeles-area folks confirm that these two points are geographically friendly?

..can't resist sayin', ain't google maps swell:

Re: New Year's Eve - pefloresjr - 12-24-2012

I like Garvin's idea of meeting up at El Cholo right after the pep rally.  Those who don't want food can enjoy a beer or margarita.  I think the vibe at El Cholo will be better than the ESPN Zone.  That might be fun for a drink but it is a big, loud atmosphere at ESPN.
Cheers,
Pete F.

El Cholo is a solid spot. Great margaritas and good mexican food.

Looks like a short walk that you can actually do.  El Cholo has always been one of the best in town.

Re: New Year's Eve - fullmetal - 12-26-2012

so much for that :p  i know there are a number of Stanford young alumni looking for a good NYE party...amazing that every place seems full for the night.

Re: New Year's Eve - GoodGrief - 12-31-2012

Just wanted to send my sincerest regrets for not being able to attend the Cardboard get-together and assorted pre-game festivities. Mrs. GoodGrief and I are flying back on NYE from visiting family in Chicago, so we're gonna miss out on all that good stuff. One of the highlights of my Orange Bowl experience was the Cardboard get-together that Garvin organized at the something-street diner in Miami. Admittedly, much of the reason for that was because they served a milkshake into which they blended a whole slice of apple pie. But second only to that milkshake was the really fun opportunity to finally attach faces to Cardboard handles that I knew so well.

Garvin sent me a sweet note about my upcoming absence from Cardboard festivities for the second year in a row in which the phrase "traitorous *****" and "force you to live under a bridge" were used. I almost teared up. And it reminded me of one of the highlights of my honeymoon in Australia last year: watching the Fiesta Bowl with my best friend in a Sydney sports bar while my newlywed wife went shopping. Ahh, Norman Rockwell couldn't have painted a more idyllic honeymoon scene. Umm, if she reads this I may need to go live under a bridge.

Just as another reminisce, I remember somebody pointing out David Marrero's parents at the Miami get-together, and I remember not knowing what to say, so I didn't say anything to them at all. After it was all over, naturally I realized the right thing to say which was, "We were fortunate to have your son play for us, and I'm glad he chose us over Notre Dame. I'm sorry that he didn't get a fair chance from Walt Harris, but I wish him the best at SJSU and beyond." As often happens, I think of the right thing after it's too late ("Jerkstore!")

Anyway, have a great time! And yes, Din Tai Fung for juicy pork&crab potstickers. Pay attention to the instructions on how to eat them or else you'll boil your mouth. Also, if you get a chance, blend a slice of apple pie into a milkshake.

This is the shrewdest piece of insight that I've come across in the five years I've been reading this board. I won't be able to rest until I get one of these.

Oooh, what would I give to be spat at in the face! - Redrum - 12-31-2012

Garvin has never, ever expressed one word of regret for my missing any of the Cardboard get-togethers.  As Stalin/Trotsky proved,  old revolutionary comrades are not sentimentalists.  ;)

Re: New Year's Eve - fullmetal - 12-31-2012

Spiny_Norman and I ran into each other at the former student-athlete/Buck Cardinal club gathering last night--there were many recognizable faces, including Bob Whitfield, Chris Hernandez, Matt Haryasz, and Fred Washington.  What a packed house.  I think Buck/Cardinal is still going on from 5-8 after the pep rally, but we'll all be over at El Cholo--right?  Spiny_Norman says he will try to make it to El Cholo, but he has to juggle some commitments.
