Stepfan was an ankle-hold here and a step there away from breaking a couple of his patented TD runs. He was the magnet for the Wisconsin defense. His ability to make something out of the smallest crease is amazing.

I have to say, I've never seen two football players accepting awards after a game and sounding more intelligent during their interviews. This may sound silly and maybe even a bit petty, but there wasn't a single "you know" between Taylor and Amanam.
What a great job of representing the school by those two guys.

Congrats to Stepfan. He definitely was a difference maker after the first two drives when our passing game sputtered a bit. His ability to pick up first downs won the game. There was some great, hard running all game.
I thought the selection of Amanam was interesting. He admitted that his interception was a matter of being in the right place at the right time and probably wouldn't have happened if not for Henry Anderson's tip. I don't know that any other defensive player distinguished themselves significantly, but I might have given it to one of the line men (Anderson, Mauro or Parry) for the way they bottled up the run in the second half. That seemed to me to be the story of the game.

My first thought was to give it to the best player on the defense, which imo was Henry Anderson.
But Amanam made the single biggest play of the game, so I definitely think he earned the recognition.
I was actually more surprised Stepfan won the award, as it most often goes to the QB of the winning team if they have any kind of success (and Hogan certainly did).

Gardner holding
Montee Ball James White on fourth and goal was pretty amazing to me. Drew Terrell turning a near-interception into a defended pass was great as well. And who was it that laid the wood on that Wisco receiver? Great form tackle. Hogan's scrambling was excellent initially, but the Wisco defense accounted for him later in the game when he started using it as a crutch (almost). I wasn't really sure he'd make it back to the LOS sometimes.

Mauro and Anderson are almost the same person to me. Mauro had that amazing 5 yard tackle for loss on 2nd and 1 that ended up snuffing the drive, plus I thought it was him and not Anderson who had the last tip. Either way, Trent Murphy had a great rush on that last play which scared the QB into rushing his throw... so he did contribute mightily in the end.

I think it was White, not Ball, that Gardner stopped on the goal-line stand (the absence of Ball on that play was an interesting personnel decision by the UW staff). Was it Carter who delivered the brobdingnagian hit on the receiver?
I'd bet the defensive MVP was a hard choice -- lots of good candidates but no one person stood out. Still, in hindsight, Amanam's selection was worth it for his acceptance "speech" alone (yes, I know that's not one of the criteria for the award :) )!

Right right right. Amazing team effort, too.

I believe the big hit that you're referring to was Jordan Richards, number 8. Herbstreit and Mussberger were gushing about the hit and I believe they even got input from their rules expert that it was a great example of a legal, hard hit. The Wisconsin player appeared to have fumbled the reception even before Richards arrived, but that hit left no doubt that there would be no completion. Our secondary is going to be great for the next couple of years with Richards, Lyons, Carter, Browning, Reynolds, Carrington, and Richards all coming back.

Looked legal to me immediately from the stadium replay. I think the receiver was already in shock that such a catchable ball had just bounced off his solar plexus...and then a human shockwave followed that up. Probably took the air out of the Wisco kid and likely nothing more, but you always have to give due diligence following big hits. I guess Richards had already built up a head of steam assuming that he'd have to cause a fumble (or force an airborne receiver out of bounds :p).
