Amazing game stat - OutsiderFan - 01-02-2013

Chase Thomas and Trent Murphy, combined for one tackle between them.  If you told me before the game Murphy and Thomas would have one tackle and zero sacks between them, I would have doubted Stanford would win.

To me, the game MVPs on defense was David Parry or Alex Carter.  Parry had three tackles, a lot for a NT, who's job is to occupy blockers, and he really stepped up in the second half.  Carter had seven tackles, a pretty high number for a CB, because he largely shut down Melvin Gordon on the jet sweep that destroyed Nebraska.

Speaking of Carter, if he isn't on all the Freshman All American teams, something is seriously wrong with the selection procedure.  That guy is a stud.

Strange, indeed. Murphy had a rough game, and both guys frequently seemed to feign blitzing but then pulled back into coverage. By design, it appeared.

Re: Amazing game stat - fullmetal - 01-02-2013

Wisco's run blocking was very good--I had the field angle, and there was sufficient daylight and grass for many runs.  I don't like the way feigning blitz turned out--Mason dared Montee Ball to run?  I can see how that would work (and it did), but it's risky to allow your opponent to play to their strength.  I'd have though our pass defense would have been good enough to put more guys in the box.

Curt Phillips running amok was a little annoying.  The announcers questioned Murphy's hesitation to close in on Phillips on that early game, right side bailout scramble.  Murphy should have taken the chance to close in and tackle--I didn't think Phillips had a reputation for being shifty.

On the other hand, if you'd told me before the game Hogan would complete a long downfield pass (20+ yards) and avoid getting sacked, I would've predicted a comfortable victory.

Speaking of downfield passing, how about Drew Terrell?  Sure, he might have overthrown it a touch...but what a catch.  What a catch.  JRP made an amazing play.

After I watched that play, I just mouthed 'wow." I thought it was a harbinger of how the rest of the game would transpire; it wasn't, but I'll take the result!

Has Hogan ever been as high on as many passes as he was yesterday? I assumed at the beginning of the game that he was just hyped up, but it seemed to continue.

I attended the game and only watched a replay last night.  Hogan was hit very hard after throwing the pass he completed to Ertz on the second offensive series.  He looked pretty shaken up right after the hit, and although seemed fine the next play, I wonder if the hit somehow affected his passing for the rest of the game.

I wondered about that as well. Hogan was 3/3 for 71 yards up to and including the long pass to Ertz and was 9/16 for 52 yards after that.

Or maybe he just had his long-overdue freshman game.
