Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - washingtonismoney - 01-02-2013

Think it's pretty much axiomatic we'd like to finish highly in the AP/Coaches' bowls (sadly no computer polls -- the BCS versions, due to their political shenanigans, love us). Unfortunately, from this perspective -- aside from the Rose Bowl win -- bowl season hasn't been doing great. The Pac-12 face plant is one factor; but New Years' Day (again, aside from Rose Bowl) didn't work out well for us -- we would've wanted Michigan and Nebraska to triumph over South Carolina and Georgia. (Though Clemson beating LSU could direct some votes our way)

Here are our remaining rooting interests:

Louisville over Florida
Oregon over Kansas State

...and that's it.

Re: Our rooting interests - OutsiderFan - 01-02-2013

Louisville looking good in first half, especially Teddy Bridgewater.  If they beat Florida, Stanford will finish ahead of Florida and LSU in the final polls.

My predicted final polls (not saying this is how I would vote):

AP
#1 Alabama
#2 Notre Dame
#3 Ohio State
#4 Oregon
#5 Georgia
#6 Stanford

Coaches
#1 Alabama
#2 Notre Dame
#3 Oregon
#4 Georgia
#5 Stanford

And Louisville made it!

This is about right, with the (small) possibility of passing Georgia which also has two losses, and had trouble defeating Nebraska. This is especially true if ND beats Alabama.

Top 6 Final season ranking. - dispr - 01-03-2013

With our Rose bowl win and some $ec teams being exposed, We should finish with a top 4 ranking!!

Final ranking should looks something like this.

1. Bama/ND
2. Or/KS
3. Stanford
4. Bama/ND
5. Or/KS
6. Georgia(barely squeaked by Nebraska who was mud-holed by Wis)

In my opinion, I think we finish 3rd if the domers win and 4th if Bama does. With the SEC being exposed, we will get a nice little jump in the final rankings. With one of our best final season rankings, our recruiting should improve as well. All around a great year to be a Stanford fan. I can't wait to start next football season!!!!

Re: Top 6 Final season ranking. - jayasena - 01-03-2013

No way we jump Bama or ND regardless of who wins. And the Pac-12 is hardly in a position to benefit from the SEC being exposed.

My guess is we finish 5th or 6th in the AP depending on whether we jump Georgia or not (I think we deserve to be higher than them given we beat Wisconsin, who annihilated their bowl opponent). Florida will fall and the loser of Oregon/K-State will drop below us. We'll be one spot higher in the Coaches since tOSU is not there.

Still, not bad at all for a "rebuilding year"!

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - dispr - 01-03-2013

If the domers do win, I can't see why we can't jump Bama. We would be the best 2 loss team in the country. I'm hoping Oregon and Oklahoma smash their respective opponents. With each SEC loss their argument for their "superior" conference  schedule goes out the window. Now, as much as I hate the ducks, we need them to perform. Our conference image took a beating with the loses to Baylor, Texas, Boise and GT. In the future, the Pac  will need to assert itself on the Nat'l stage if we want to be in the National title discussion. With the lack of a true playoff system(we need a 16 team playoff) the beauty pageant contest will remain, and the Sec will continue to stack teams in the top 10(undeservedly)

p.s I excluded Tosu since they are bowl ineligible.

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - terry - 01-03-2013

I agree with OutsiderFan. Stanford probably will end up as # 6 in the AP poll and # 5 in the coaches poll. There's a chance that Texas A&M could pass Stanford, which would drop Stanford down one spot.

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - jayasena - 01-03-2013

Regardless of our final ranking implications, I'm rooting for Bama in the NCG. As painful as it is for me to cheer for an SEC team, the alternative -- nine months of "Return to Glory" purgatory splattered all over football media -- is unimaginable.

Besides, ND clogging up a benefit-of-doubt playoff slot is every bit as bad as the SEC getting a second slot. Plus a national champ ND is a much bigger problem for us recruiting-wise.

I will root against Domers even if it's NOT in Stanford's interests - Redrum - 01-03-2013

Well, when I'm off my meds, I will.  And when it comes to ND, I am usually off my meds.  I like the edge it gives my urge to abuse a leprechaun

At a local New Years Eve party, the host's relatives stopped by on their way to Miami.  Notre Dame to the core.  He and his wife both went to ND,  one daughter a grad,  two others currently students.  Great guy.  Great kids.  Hope they weep all the way home.

RTR!

I agree, only it's a notch worse than purgatory.

I would hate to offend the woofing gods -- can one offend the woofing gods when talking about a team you don't particularly care for? -- but I suspect the Tide will demonstrate that they and the South Benders aren't in the same weight class. The leprechaun looks like a welterweight and that 'bama elephant, well, self-explanatory.

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - fullmetal - 01-03-2013

I'd like the game to progress almost exactly the way the Stanford-USB game progressed, except that maybe Alabama scores a 4th-and-goal TD on the ground with the RB getting it in on the second effort, tying the game for a second OT.  And then after that, I don't care who wins.

As much as I hate to write this, I think the domers pull out the upset. This season, they just find ways to win(with ref help in some cases) Bama on the other hand has not really impressed me. They very easily could have had 2 more loses had Les and Richt coached a bit better.

Gotta agree with the tone of this.  Can't abide the SEC superiority nonsense.

I'd rather control my own destiny, and in a sense, we control ours with Notre Dame.  I am fine with all of our usual opponents beating up everyone else but us.

Setting them up to fall hard next year in our yard is fine with me.

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - Farm93 - 01-03-2013

5th/6th seems to be Stanford's destiny at this point.  Oregon winning is critical, for several reasons.  The most important is that if Oregon wins the Pac-12 Networks will be able to claim two of the top 5 teams in 2012 and probably preseason 2013 too.  So go...oooooooooooooooooooooooooo Ducks!

ND v Bama is a bit more troubling.  It is probably better for Stanford 2013 if ND comes to town as the defending BCS champs.  Also, the defending champs will be less hungry, and therefore might not be able to achieve their goals when they come to the Bay Area late in the year.  However, I personally will have a hard time watching anything on NBC if ND is the national champs because NBC will promote that for a long, long time.  So I was ready to support 'Bama.

However with Florida's loss last night a new exciting prospect has emerged.
The Pac-12 COULD go 2-0 in BCS bowl games this year.  Very, very important claim.
The SEC COULD go 0-2 in BCS bowl games this year.  And that would be great.

And yet, I have seen both teams enough to know how this BCS title game thing is going to go down.  Bama will win by 21 or more with ND getting no more than 10 points.  Bama is faster at every single position on the field.  The ND team that barely beat Stanford without Hogan and SC without Barkley is not good enough to beat a healthy and motivated Bama.

I've been struggling with who is going to win, but this pretty much clinches it for me.  Notre Dame has been VERY lucky to win against Stanford, Pitt, and USC.  Alabama is more talented than all of those teams.  Brian Kelly is a great coach, but the Tide has too much for the Irish.  I'll hope for a 3-2 Alabama win.

next year should be a big rebuilding year for ND.  they lose 8 starters on O and another 4 on D (assuming no one goes to the NFL early).  they also lose another handful of SRs on their 2 deep.

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - yvonne - 01-03-2013

"Rebuilding year"? Don't we know about rebuilding years?

Re: Our rooting interests/season end final ranking - washingtonismoney - 01-03-2013

ND's got a ton of recruited talent, and it appears Brian Kelly is -- at the least -- not completely incompetent in managing it, as we could count on with previous Domer coaches. So I wouldn't count on their falling off of the map.
