things to phase out... -
estephan500 - 01-03-2013
A few things I would like to see less of. In case you were wondering:
-- The repeated far beyond nauseam bit of chatter that first team members, and now every writer or analyst has placed into every damn piece or video snippet I have seen over the last 3 months:
"First they thought we were done when Gerhardt left. Then they said we were done when Harbaugh left. then they said we were done when Luck left. Well what do you know..." OK, GOT IT, 300 times now, please let's retire that one.
-- Condoleezza Rice. I understand that she's an awesome booster. Smart as hell, etc. But sorry, to me she and her era just represent failure, not success, of strategy and intelligence. Always showing the photos, footage of her with Shaw, her at the games, bla bla, is nothing more than a corny "Gee, what a high powered place Stanford is." Put the camera on high fives from Mason or Hamilton or some of WBB players that are allied with the football team. More relevant. Any particle physicists we can get down onto the sidelines?
-- While we're at it... "Wow, Stanford gives an iPad to each player" is getting a bit old.
On the other side:Â Things to see more of: Jamal-Rashad Patterson catch photos

I'll add one that comes up just about every signing day, since we are only about a month away.
"I don't care what (recruiting analysts, other fans, whoever) say about our recruiting class, Coach Shaw (or whoever our current coach is) says he is happy with it and that's good enough for me.
Also when we suggest that some running back or wide receiver might be a little small for the position.
"Look at Darrin Nelson".
And now, w/ a responsible opposing viewpoint - Redrum - 01-03-2013
Things I tolerate in the name of ultimate progress
Condoleeza Rice: Yeah, the TV bods fawning over her does get old, but sometime when you're laid up w/ a broken leg or something, go back and comb through old recruiting stories. The common thread is how amped-up recruits (and their families) are about meeting and
spending time w/ Ms. Rice. Seems to be of particular value to out-of-state recruits. If it brings in more talent, let her good times roll.
"First Gerhart, then Harbaugh, then Luck..." Sure, that get's old to us die-hard fans, but the message is vital for our national recruiting. It's actually a
great message to be pounding into the skulls of the media bods and having it come directly from the College Football Death Star, ESPN, helps reinforce our message. Also helps w/ recruits because other schools are spouting the same old blather about how it's all over now on The Farm. What was the phrase attributed to Lenin: "Useful idiots" ?
OTOH, I agree w/ JPRI: It's a larger truth that one never knows exactly which recruits will have monster college careers and which will not contribute. But I would send an envelope of cash to any prominent coach who said. "You know, we just got our asses handed to us in recruiting this year. One more recruiting class like this and we're done for."

I'm with Redrum about Condi; she may be the next president -- of the United States. Then she can really recruit for us.Â
Meanwhile, here's an article from the Chron on Stanford's football future with some new names to think about. http://www.sfgate.com/collegesports/article/Stanford-must-replace-Taylor-others-4162879.php

As Redrum alluded to, those messages aren't for those of us who follow the program religiously (and let's face it, there are only a relatively small number of us). It's for the rest of the population. And the Rose Bowl broadcast or some article about it could easily be the first time many in the general population thought about Stanford's staying power in that context or realized that Condy is even associated with Stanford, much less Stanford Football.
It's like advertising, right? There's no informational value in a commercial for someone who's already researched the heck out of the product in question but a good commercial could strike the perfect chord with someone as yet unfamiliar with the product.

My younger brother met Ryan Burn's dad at the Army Armor whatever Bowl happening in San Antonio this weekend. He said that the visit to Stanford sealed the deal for Ryan but he made a specific point of mentioning Condi.
The only people who don't like Condi are football hating commies.Â
She should be front and center. Symbolizes the most important reason why playing football at Stanford isn't just about playing football at Stanford. At least to rednecks like me from the hustings.

I think you'll get your wish on this one next year. For starters, it won't really make any sense for them to repeat this point next year, because while Taylor and Thomas are both amazing players, they don't have the star power that turns this line of thought into compelling television. No non-Stanford fans will be thinking "how can Stanford move on from here?". Also, I don't think we need this publicity any more with recruits, so I agree with you that its a good thing it will phase out. At this point, Stanford will have been ranked continuously for basically the entire time recruits have been playing high school ball and dreaming about potential schools. The type of players we want will have seen other players like them at Stanford play on an elite team, get publicity and major awards, and then move on to the NFL. In short, I think next year we'll just look like a regular old elite program, not a surprisingly good team that is doing something out of character for its program.

That's just not true. They also might be basketball hating commies.
I think Condi should be in jail, and am happy to call myself a commie. But I love football AND basketball.

...now Lane Kiffin, for him I can see some slammer time. Cardcoug will feel differently when Stanford recruits are getting calls that start, "Mr. 17-year-old-recruit, please hold for the President."

I agree. I think the idea that we are a flash in the pan has become so patently ridiculous that even those who would like to believe it don't dare say it any longer, for fear of looking silly.

ha! but at that point, wouldn't that be an NCAA violation of some sort?

Lol. I'd never heard ESPiN referred to quite so poetically. I may have to steal this.
