WBB: Stanford 57 Colorado 40 - 81alum - 01-04-2013

Stanford had a fairly comfortable win against a previously unbeaten team.  The commentary by Ros Gold-Onwude on the Pac-12 network was particularly interesting, given that she had seemingly talked extensively with Tara after the UConn loss and had some thoughtful insight to that game.

Stanford played excellent defense again, which is becoming a hallmark of the team.  The real question was whether Tara has found a way to fix the offense.  Obviously, Colorado is not as good a defensive team as UConn, so the the answer so far is "mixed."  Stanford had some nice plays and but is still not fluid and prolific at the offensive end.  Chiney had her usual 20 point game, with 11 rebounds.  Joslyn had a good first half, coming out of a terrible offensive slump for the whole month of December.  She scored 13 points with 6 rebounds.  But then she receded some in the second half.  Amber's jump shot was back and she scored 11.  Better, she had six assists.  On the down side, Amber had 4 fouls, including some reach-ins.  Ruef had 4 pretty assists, too--some of the high-low passing to Chiney that we have previously been missing.  So, with 13 assists, 48% shooting, and 57 points there were signs the offense is improving.

On the negative side for the offense stand two stark facts.  First, we had 18 turnovers, which is especially  troubling given that Colorado did not press that much but still managed to rack up 13 steals.  Our turnovers seem to have been spread out among nearly all players.  Second, our three point shooting continues to be woeful at only 2-10.  Joslyn made her first shot, which was a three, and Jasmine Camp made a three, but Bonnie missed 4 attempts.  She, unfortunately, seems to be very streaky, and she was not "on" tonight.

The most notable personnel change that Tara made was to give Toni only 10 minutes.  Toni took only 2 shots and had no points.  This is the second game this year something like this has happened, and the first got us wondering.  Jasmine Camp got 18 minutes, made 3 baskets and 7 points--but also 3 turnovers.  To my eye, Amber played with a lot more movement and defensive intensity than last game, and she got 34 minutes.

Ros pointed out several interesting points.  Stanford has used three different offenses this year.  The Princeton offense was used to surprise and beat Baylor--an effort to get Griner to come out away from the basket.  Pick and roll action was inserted to take advantage of Amber's midrange jumpshot.  Tonight, Stanford opened up with the old triangle again.  Tara, said Ros, regretted not sticking to the offense the team knew best against Connecticut.  I translated that to mean that departing so much from the triangle was Tara's experiment this fall and it worked against Baylor but failed miserably against Connecticut.

Another interesting Ros observation about UConn.  Chiney was discombobulated by defenders cheating to her right.  This last week Chiney has practiced her left handed shots and she came out against Colorado and made several of them.  She will be harder to defend if she continues to break that tendency--Chiney and Amber need to continue to work on breaking their tendencies if we are going to have a chance against the elite teams down the road.

All in all, a good start on the road to recovery, but we have a ways to go before we get to those Stanford triangles of a few years ago that routinely put up 80.

Would agree if I had just watched the first half but I am disappointed in the 2nd half where we lost a lead with the wrong personnel in the game making the same mistakes as we had just watched. We stopped passing the ball.

There are a lot of things that are hard to predict about this team, but Bonnie's 3-point shooting isn't one of them:  Based on past performance, it's almost a dead bang certainty that if she misses her first 3 attempt, she shouldn't be given the ball again [at least until she's gone back to the bench and had a chance to reset], whereas, if she knocks down the first one, no one else should be allowed to touch the ball again on offense until Bonnie has put up three more -- all of which are a virtual lock to touch nothing but net.

81alum is right: Look up "streaky" in Wikipedia and there's a picture of Bonnie hoisting a 3.

Re: WBB: Stanford 57 Colorado 40 - Kokenis - M T - 01-05-2013

At least on KZSU, there was speculation about why Toni only played 10 minutes.

On the rebound at 6:59 in the first (which is shown in a replay), Amber's elbow comes down onto Toni's head and Toni reacts to it.  Then, shortly after, you see her on the bench and a woman with gloves on talking to Toni, and then shortly after that Toni is holding an icebag on her head, where she was hit by the elbow.  Toni didn't go back in the game after that.

I know nothing more, but given the history of concussions in Stanford's past, plus the current emphasis, I expect she sat out as a precaution.

Re: WBB: Stanford 57 Colorado 40 - M T - 01-05-2013

I didn't get to review the game until today.  I watched it live yesterday, listening to KZSU.  I prefer having a PxP call (and it was a good call on KZSU).  I find Ros G-O (on TV) to be a bit of a droner and it bothers me to have to listen to her.  Yes, it seems the WBB program gives info to her that they don't share with KZSU.  IIRC, last year, it was almost embarrassing how they didn't send out players for interviews after the game.  Last night they sent out a different player than was expected.  Sigh...

We benefited from playing a much weaker team than the previous game.  We mostly moved better, but we still had possessions that had to be rushed.  I recall one time we took advantage of breaking the press, but we hadn't much improved that, if at all.  We didn't put Colorado down but let them hang on, gaining 7 points on us during the 2nd half.  We could have melted down when we were up just 12, but we didn't.

The offense was again too ineffective, less than 1.5 points per minute.  Like the football team, the defense kept the opponent at bay.  Stanford in this game did not play well enough to contend with UConn.

I again took one part of the game (from 12:43 in the 2nd (41-22) to 3:30 (49-37), less than 1pt per minute) and watched it closely.  If someone wants me to post my notes, I can.  Amber didn't have as many poor plays as in the segment in the UConn game, but she did have more than others.  She did play better than vs UConn.  Her overall effectiveness was highest on the team.  If anyone wants to look at what I found weak, these were the ones I noted (game clock time of the overall play).
9:47 bad pass by Mikaela
9:34 poor foul by Jos
9:21 good play by Amber
9:04 good pass by Mikaela
8:38 poor def. position by Jos
7:52 poor def. position by Amber
7:37 good pick & movement by Amber
7:26 unfortunate turn by Amber (I don't know if that is the way she should turn or she should have turned the other way).    Good play by Mikaela
7:10 bad pass by Amber
7:06 bad def. position by Amber
6:51 Amber doesn't hold her screen. After turnover, bad def. position/laziness by Amber
6:08 Bad pass by Mikaela
5:34 Good shot by Amber
5:12 Poor attention by Jasmine
4:55 Weak def. position by Mikaela
3:34 Bad def. position by Amber
Note: But for a bad call by the ref, Amber had a steal at 8:38.  The "steal" by CU at 8:00 was simply an unforced turnover.  Mikaela should have been credited with the steal at 7:06, not Amber.

I don't sense that there was a change in Amber's attitude (esp. about defense);  I think she just wasn't playing against as good a player, so what I saw as laziness wasn't getting exposed in this game.  But she really does seem to spend a lot of time moving slowly. (On defense, besides the above, see 2nd 16:15, 15:39, 13:16)

==============================

Stats:  It's already been pointed out that there were a season high number of steals by our opponent, resulting in a season high number of turnovers by Stanford.  The 5 turnovers that didn't correspond to steals tied our low. I didn't check, but some of the steals were from more than usual tie balls.  But, on their side, our opponent also had a season high of 16 turnovers, which with our 5 steals, was a season high in what I call unforced turnovers.
Our opponent had a season low number of 3ptrs (1 of 12) and percentage.  While they had a season high of 19 FTA, they only made a season low percentage.

Obviously our offense again sputtered, with just 57 (vs 71 avg) points. Our 2PT% was above average, but our 3PT% was low again. OR% + DR% was 114, so we won rebounding.  A/FG was at 57%, above our avg of 47%.

We still haven't had anyone foul out, but both Jos & Amber had 4.

The official Play-by-Play was poorly done.  In one spot a couple of trips down the court were recorded at the same second.  They swapped shots by Amber and Chucky (resulting in the wrong team scoring).  At one point it shows a different number of players substituted in vs out.  So, I don't know how accurate this is since it is derived from the (somewhat corrected) PxP:

I believe Stanford needs to concentrate more on blocking out.  If we block the other player out, we don't get blocked out ourselves.  I see a lot of that happening against us, which dulls what could be an overwhelming rebound advantage.  And, as I said last game, IMHO, Amber needs to hustle more, esp. on defense.
