Fending off those suitors - washingtonismoney - 01-05-2013

From one of those rumor-mongering sites: http://coachingsearch.com/coaching-search-ticker.html

Quote:Arkansas State: A source has informed me that Arkansas State head coach Bryan Harsin offered the offensive coordinator job to Stanford running backs coach / recruiting coordinator Mike Sanford Jr., who declined the opportunity to remain with David Shaw at Stanford.

Very nice to keep.

OTOH the coaching rumor carousel has Michigan State DC Pat Narduzzi going to SC. This is simultaneously quite bad and quite T.rojan: Narduzzi's Spartans have been excellent on defense the past few years but also have the reputation of being, well, dirty.

I imagine it was pretty easy for Sanford to turn down the opportunity to move to Jonesboro, Arkansas and to coach in the Sun Belt Conference. But it's inevitable that he's going to be offered a better job with a better school one of these days. I just want to keep him as long as possible.

Why would a fairly well-regarded coach want a lateral move to work with a coach who is almost guaranteed to be fired next year, even if it's with a higher-profile team?

Have you been to Jonesboro?  I think Larry Scott should play a bowl game there against a Sun Belt foe, preferably on a Monday in early December or the day after the National Title game.    ;D

I may be too optimistic, but I think our days of losing assistants at a high rate may be coming to an end.  If Shaw is serious about staying long-term, I think there is less reason for these guys to reposition themselves.  Shaw has said publicly that perhaps in contrast to prior regimes he offers assistants a great work/life balance.  If they are getting housing assistance to offset the cost of living issues, I would think this would be a top destination for assistants.  The one possible negative I can think of would be the national recruiting/travel grind, although that might appeal to some guys also.Â
