It may be a POWER MOVE for money from Kelly, but you'd think he could've wrenched free the cash on the strength of a 12-1 season. Oh, well, we'll see. (Or maybe Kelly himself appreciates how lucky his 12-1 season was and is selling high.)

He's got a stock bubble going on. Cash in while you can, Mr. Kelly.
That WOULD be something for Kelly to go NFL - Redrum - 01-09-2013
Notre Dame's fortunes might drop harder than a scissors lift in a high wind. Not just taking a cheap shot. Well, yes. I am...but there's more. What great coaches, or promising young coaches haven't already made their move. The music has just about stopped and without Kelly, who knows what winner they can dredge up.

And he can go ballistic to his heart's content...until it blows a valve, of course. I think that mushroom cloud I see on the eastern horizon must be emanating from NDNation.com

Or maybe it's just a bargaining ploy on Kelley's part. I presume he's being paid well enough as it is but maybe he wants to lower admissions requirements for recruits (remember that this was apparently a big issue when Urban Meyer turned them down a while ago) or something of the sort.
Now that the ND administration has tasted what success could be like, yet how far away the real goal remains, this would be an ideal time to strike while the pigskin's hot.

Assuming that they haven't lowered their admissions requirements up to now, doesn't the fact that they went 12-0 this year (along with Stanford 3 year BCS run) show that you
can win with high character/academic standard players?
Although it will be an interesting test to see if it's sustainable to have two programs with high admission standards have continued success in the BCS era. And here I'm taking it on faith the general sentiment that N.otre Dame is at least directionally on par with Stanford in that arena and a significant step above typical factories.

Yes, they made it to the NCG but lost badly. Badly enough that a lot of people felt ND wasn't the #2 team in the country. So I think someone looking for a reason to argue in favor of lowering standards to bridge the gap with the likes of Alabama could make a decent case. And I'm guessing Kelley has an interest in making that case. That was my point.
Personally, I agree that Stanford and ND have demonstrated you can win with a higher bar (at least in Stanford's case, significantly higher) than the NCAA minimum. And it's hard to argue that, say, Oregon has more talent than ND. So I don't buy the argument. Just speculating that Kelley may want to.

I expect it'll end with Brian Kelly getting an extension, but I really enjoy the chaos.

DOMERPOCALYPSE UPDATE II: IRISH STILL BLIGHTING
Quote:A source with knowledge of the situation told CBSChicago.com that there are two major reasons for the silence: 1) Kelly is indeed seriously debating a move to the NFL, and 2) He doesnt have an offer right now.

Meanwhile, how do you make a N.otre D.ame omelet? - Redrum - 01-11-2013
Take three eggs. Put them into a bowl that's too big. Beat the hell out of them.
We does love our derisive humor down heah. And the jokes are just beginning.

Yeah, I just wanted it to fit the Schroedinger's Cat framing. I didn't believe he would leave, just enjoyed the DEFCON 5 atmosphere.

Kelly didn't leave.....this time.Â
But if he is taking the opportunity to actually go and sit down for an interview and seriously listen to the NFL, then I think it is only a matter of time before he goes. Another successfuly year or two and I assume he'll be on his way. The whole situation feels like Harbaugh in the Midwest; ambitious coach moves from lowest levels of college football (where he had lots of success) to revive a moribund program, flirts for a couple of years with the NFL, gaining contract extensions and raises along the way, and finally gives in to the siren song of big time football.Â
Same thing could happen with Shaw at some point, though for now he got his contract extension/raise, but presumably avoided the drama of any interviews. Maybe that is an indication that the Sirens are not in Shaw's head just yet. Or maybe he's the rare gu at this level who really is content, as he says he is.Â
