Hey Garvin,

There are some brobdingnagian statements in this article:

"Shaw describes Stanford’s recruiting of Luck as “brobdingnagian” and notes that Luck’s presence helped Stanford build national recognition."

“Our junior days are brobdingnagian for us to get guys the information they need about AP classes, finishing with their graduating class and having high enough SAT scores to come to Stanford.”

Shaw obviously got the memo that brobdingnagian is, once again, unchained!

Boston College SB Nation article on Stanford football and the Forbes article [ http://www.bcinterruption.com/2013/1/31/3934746/stanford-football-jim-harbaugh-lessons-boston-college-steve-addazio ]. Includes salary info I thought might not be published.

I blame brobdingnagian for Smythe, Allen, and Cunningham.

"I blame brobdingnagian for Smythe, Allen, and Cunningham."

This is absolutely true! All three of them told ESPN that they dropped Stanford after reading the word brobdingnagian on the CardBoard. The office of admissions also released a report saying that they could no longer admit football players because of the change in policy on the CardBoard. Posters on this board simply don't understand the significance of the verbiage they use. IT IS brobdingnagian!

Re: Daily Journal on Stanford football - Oasis - 02-02-2013

The Daily Journal, the daily legal newspaper, is usually the place you can find the riveting latest on your general liability insurance policy, big deals and who is doing them and that new tax regulation that means your uranium depletion exemption just imploded.  But much to my surprise the DJ ran an article about Stanford football on January 17.  You can't post it without paying a ridiculously high reprint fee, but the author, David Carico (a Stanford alum in SF who specializes in appellate work) says we're underrated for five reasons:

1.  Football is not that important at Stanford.  We don't have a rabid fan base where the mania passes from one generation to the next.  Some people at Stanford never go to games.

2.  Stanford doesn't have an "identifiable" mascot like the ones that do pushups when the team scores; the sports media don't like the Tree.

3.  Football revenue is small compared to the team's recent success, although Stanford is a bargain program. It pays less per win than any other ranked team except Kansas State.

4. Stanford is not in the SEC or Oregon.  For example, Georgia went 12-2 and finished ahead of us, despite only one win vs. ranked teams vs. four for Stanford.  We beat Oregon and they end up ranked ahead of us.

5. ESPN is not a Stanford-friendly medium. (Here the author mentions Lhoo Hotes's commenting too bad about the Stanford FG vs. Oregon.)  They don't like the Band and their spoofs of the opposing side ("The Irish: Why Must They Fight?").

I don't see any of this changing at Stanford, except that fan interest should increase.  There seemed no lack of numbers or enthusiasm at the Rose Bowl.

6. The public has yet to make the connection between Cory Booker and Stanford Football.  Things can only get better from there.

Let's do irony and SEC and passion at the same time and go kill some trees up in Berkel Lee.

(Sorry. I lost your font.)

Does anyone think Stanford football would be rated better if the Tree juggled chain-saws?  Seriously?

Re: The Secret to [Our] Success - Kathy - 02-03-2013

I think the media holds the Tree in the same regard as the Band. I don't see either icon going away.

I like the Tree, although I prefer the earlier model that looked like a Christmas tree with lips (like the little stuffed one I have) that was in the Sports Center commercial. It sure beats that creepy-looking creature across the Bay.

Re: The Secret to [Our] Success - fullmetal - 02-03-2013

The Singaporean LED traffic signage uses the word 'massive' as the highest degree of traffic jam.  While wandering around during a layover last year, I watched one sign go from 'Heavy traffic jam ahead' to 'Massive traffic jam ahead.'

Not spray-laptop-with-my-coffee funny, BUT... - Redrum - 02-03-2013

pretty damned good:  MT's suggestion that The Tree juggle chain-saws.  THAT was great.  Think about how it would change media coverage.  Think about how it would change the mascot selection process.  Made my morning.  Good work, MT!
