most relevant quote from beyond the paywall:

Quote:"I've been to three Alabama games, two Auburn games and one LSU game, so those schools have shown a lot of interest," O'Connor said. "So has UCLA, Stanford, Georgia and Florida."

O'Connor said one of those programs has piqued his interest.

"I'd like to hear more from Stanford," O'Conner said. "Just their combination of academics and athletics and I think I'd really fit well in their offensive system. Definitely that's the one school I'd like to hear from."

I'm pretty sure Shaw is holding out for Keller Chryst.

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - slide - 01-14-2013

I'm with YM on Chryst.  Shaw had a bunch of '14 QBs in camp this summer.  I do not recall O'Connor being one of them.  he would also make an interesting OU case.  third HS in three years?

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - socalstanfan1 - 01-14-2013

I imagine any highly regarded QB in the 2014 class is going to watch as closely as they can (and given Chryst's proximity to Stanford, and his father's connection to the coaching world, he might be able to watch quite closely) the development of both Hogan and Burns (assuming Burns follows through and signs with us).  If both of those guys develop, and if the early evaluation of Burns is that he is as good as some people project he will be, I'm guessing that may discourage some people from choosing Stanford.  It's one thing for Burns to come in, probably redshirt for a year, then probably sit one more year while Hogan leads the team as a red-shirt Junior.  If Hogan has finished his degree and continued to refine his game, at that point you could imagine him moving to the NFL, opening the way for Burns.  But someone coming in in 2014 would have to climb over Burns to get that spot, when Burns has an extra year in the system.

I would love to have Chryst in the Stanford program, and maybe he figures he can out-compete anyone who happens to be there.  But I could also see him going someplace that doesn't have such a seemingly solid QB succession set up (assuming Burns really does make himself into the heir-apparent behind Hogan)

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - yvonne - 01-14-2013

I don't see it that way at all. The emergence of Hogan proves that class year is not the primary determinant of who plays. In addition, if he does come along and get drafted in the NFL, it would prove that Stanford develops quarterbacks. Prospective players want to play, and they also want to attend the place that puts them in the best position to advance.

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - StannyBoy - 01-14-2013

I don't think Chryst is worried about competing with Ryan Burns. And Burns will redshirt so he'll be more or less a complete unknown a year from now - so Chryst will not have any idea how likely Burns will be to take over after Hogan. QBs can look good in practice but I don't buy into it until they play well in a game.

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - socalstanfan1 - 01-14-2013

I agree that players want to put themselves in position to have success and play at the highest level, and if Stanford can develop a reputation as a place where QBs can develop into NFL calibre players, that will help.  Certainly, USC in the Carroll years had a pipeline of top-rated QBs, starting roughly with Palmer and moving on through, well, Barkley.  So having Burns and Hogan does not preclude the possibility of Chryst coming to Stanford.

However, I think depth charts do matter, and I assume that young players who can choose from any number of programs (and Chryst certainly looks like a player who will be able to choose from most any place), will consider who is in the program ahead of him at the various schools they are considering, as well as the track record those schools have in terms of developing quarterbacks (along with academics, geography, and everything else).  Make no mistake, I'd love to have Hogan, Burns, and Chryst all in the program by spring of 2014.  One never knows how players will develop, or how injuries will impact the depth chart.  But I think its foolish to think that the depth chart won't play some kind of factor in the Chryst decision.

I wouldn't be worried at all with competing with Burns -- he's very raw at this point and who knows what the chances are that he'll make up for lost time and climb up the learning curve. I'm unsure if Chryst feels the same way. At any rate, it'll be difficult to battle for time at any desirable place.

That said, I wouldn't exactly be shocked if Chryst chooses someplace else. In that event, I would guess the #2 guy is Brad Kaaya.

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - yvonne - 01-14-2013

It's not a bad idea to take a quarterback in each class.  First, as we saw this year, it's not a given that a quarterback or even two quarterbacks will pan out. Depth at this position is not only to insure against injury, but to enable the competition necessary for an appropriate performer to emerge.

I am not Chryst is concerned about competing with anyone at QB (and Burns is the same way).  I think these guys want to prove themselves against others.  and Shaw has already had the two QBs in camp this summer so I am sure they have a good idea of each other.

Hi guys, I'm a constant lurker in the forums, but religious consumer of all things CardBoard.

Here's an interview with Burns by Rivals where Burns discusses his commitment. He touches upon Keller Chryst briefly at the end (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=PjdO-lFLZk8). Seems like he's excited about the possibility of Chryst coming in to compete.

This article, on some flimsy reporting, has the battle for Chryst between Stanford and $C.  If that really is the case, Stanford should be in good position. (Though I still worry about the usual suspects among the recruiting elite getting in the mix).  If Chryst's concern is playing time behind Burns, keep in mind that Max Browne is at $C and more highly touted.  It will be between who's got the better program and coach (Stanford).  Bribes from $C's boosters (even if they have the nerve to do it) will make little difference to a Palo Alto kid, whose father is an NFL assistant coach.

Kiffen won't be coaching in 2014, and the new coach will promote the fresh start and ability to come straight in. Besides, he may want to get away from home. It'll be a battle.

Doesn't matter. Chryst will probably make a decision this spring or summer. That's what QBs do.

Re: another 2014 QB recruit? - Treebound - 02-19-2013

What I like about Chryst, is similar to what I liked about Luck when he was being recruited.  He comes from an NFL family and he has likely benefited greatly from his father's experience and coaching.  As we all saw, Luck was experienced beyond his years and picked defenses and DC's apart.  Who can forget the post season QB session with "Chuckie?"  Luck's impact to the Colt's is a testament to his football IQ.  He threw that team on his back/arm at times.

I hope Chryst has similar IQ in the making.  Hopefully that same IQ (football or otherwise) will keep him far away from $C.  Hey, didn't they just fire their baseball coach for cheating?  Some things never change...
