And I missed Parks and Rec last night, but go ahead and play spoiler if anybody caught Andrew's performance.

One of the few jobs I can see him taking, since it's not just a lateral move. I still hope he doesn't, it'd be nice to have a season without any major coaching turnover...

If you read the comments, Indy fans are excited about the prospect.  Though Brad Wells, the chief blogger there, really does word his title poorly, causing most of his readers to think Hamilton is already hired.

Here's the clip.  Not bad, but not as awesome as Harbaugh's Saved by the Bell cameo.

So Rob Lowe is from my home town.  He used to babysit some people I went to school with (insert joke here).  So whenever he was in town, word would spread like wildfire among the girls:

"OMG did you hear Rob Lowe was at the International House of Pankcakes?!?!"

"Shut up!  Do you think he's still there?!?  Should we ditch?!"

Pep interviewed with Oregon for their head coaching job: http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/blog/bruce-feldman/21576853/stanford-oc-interviewed-for-oregon-job

I believe Oregon has their own version of the Rooney Rule, so chatter has been that Pep's just a sop to that. Still, employers have found themselves unexpectedly blown away by these "formalities," which I'm sure is why Hamilton took the interview.

Now this would be strange:

Re: Pep to Indy? - Bruce Wang - 01-18-2013

Not complaining, of course.  But I wonder why Mason isn't the one getting all the attention.

Pep to Indy, says Drukarev: http://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1461724

It's all about upside. If the defense is good in 2013 -- which it should be -- Mason gets all of the credit. If the offense is good in 2013 -- which it might be -- Shaw and Hamilton will definitely split credit (at best), and Shaw might get the lion's share. OTOH, Hamilton in Indy, working for a defensive-minded coach, will get all the coaching-related credit for the offense.

That's what makes it puzzling that no one is going after Mason. The defense, which was spectacular, was his baby. But he has no suitors? Meanwhile, our offense varied between "serviceable" and "awful", and Hamilton is a hot commodity? It just doesn't really make sense.

He may have had suitors; my point is that he's probably turned them down. If you think -- as Mason probably does -- that you're going to be a head coach, and if you think you're going to have a good-to-great defense for the foreseeable future, what's the point in interviewing for every defensive coordinator job that comes along?

Re: Pep to Indy? - OutsiderFan - 01-18-2013

I made this point in a post last week, but I'll reiterate it here...

You interview when you are interested in leaving.  Hamilton has made it clear, and Shaw is certainly aware that he wants to climb the coaching ladder, so he's interviewing.  Mason is a different story.  He's not interviewing because he is not ready to move on from Stanford.  Here's a quote from a story Kevin Gemmell did on Mason in November:

"I'm so in love with what is happening here with our players," he said. "I truly believe I am where I'm supposed to be."

Contrast this with the article on Hamilton in the WashPo, where he made clear he wants to be back closer to D.C.

Re: Pep to Indy? - FarmBoy - 01-18-2013

As noted in the ESPN article on the topic:

Quote:Pep Hamilton, whose official title for Stanford is "Andrew Luck Director of Offense," is a leading candidate to become Andrew Luck's director of offense for the Indianapolis Colts.

I must admit, losing Pep might not be the worst thing for the team. I agree with others that his offense wasn't particularly creative or high-powered the past two years. The 2011 team excelled not because of a "decided schematic advantage" or play calling, but because you had Decastro, Martin et al blocking for Andrew Luck, Stepfan Taylor and a couple elite TEs. But maybe I'm not giving enough credit to Pep for enabling that success.

Anyway, I'll admit I wasn't enthralled by the offense this year; but while next year's offense might get better from a coaching perspective, it definitely might also get worse. I think the problem was more a lack of talent than a lack of coaching, in other words.

But the idea that we might well improve coaching-wise is a pretty common one, so I'll pose this question: why were so many coaches -- some pretty smart, successful ones to boot -- interested in hiring Pep Hamilton despite his awful, no-good, uncreative, bad-playcalling ways?

If the Colts want Hamilton, I think that speaks well of him -- the Colts have some in-house, first-hand knowledge of Pep's coaching. So he may very well turn out to be a loss for us.

That said, I have to admit to having thought along FramBoy's reasoning above. The offense overall, and quarterbacks in particular (which were Pep's primary roles), didn't exactly impress during his tenure (aside from Luck, who needed little coaching at that point in his Stanford career).

Re: Pep to Indy? - yvonne - 01-18-2013

Is he going to be the Andrew Luck Director of Offense in Indianapolis?

More likely, Director of the Andrew Luck Offense.

Re: Pep to Indy? - yvonne - 01-18-2013

My guess is Bloomgren moves up and we bring someone in to work on the passing game, either receivers, quarterbacks, or both.

Re: Pep to Indy? - Treebound - 01-18-2013

I think your are right Yvonne.    The key question is can Shaw bring in a strong coach for the wide outs that can:

1) Coach up our current receivers, and
2) Enable us to recruit some real game breakers moving forward?

It always puzzled me that Shaw started as a receiver and receiver's coach, but we couldn't get the wide outs onto the team when we had the best QB in the land.  Time to change that given the direction of the offense.

Re: Pep to Indy? - Oasis - 01-18-2013

A lot of the time our 2012 offense was predictable and sluggish, so I don't think Pep's leaving would be a big loss.  I still remember us almost pointing to the spot where Stepfan was going to run -- twice -- and daring the Belligerent Hibernians to stop us -- which they did.  To Pep's credit, our first two drives vs. the Cholesterolics were very creative.  No doubt several large bodies keeled over in the stands.  And Pep had other brilliant moments.  But much of the year, as others have said, our offense looked the way it did in the middle of the Rose Bowl game.

Given Pep's proclivity for the ordre profond and the slow-developing running play, I wonder why Oregon's flying circus would be interested.  He doesn't seem much suited to their system.  He's more a guy for Wisconsin.
