No matter how bad we thought of Nunes' abilities -

we never stooped to
treating him the way these Cal "fans" are treating their poorly performing former quarterback. Remember:
- Players can't be held accountable for their natural gifts or the lack thereof
- Players don't choose who starts. Coaches do. Almost any player would choose starting over sitting

There were rumors that Maynard was starting only because Keenan Allen insisted on it (and threatened not to play if Maynard was benched). I have no idea if that's true or not. But if it is, then it would be entirely justifiable for Kal fans to be very angry with both Maynard and Allen.
In contrast, Nunes handled the situation very well. Every report I heard suggested that he wasn't happy about being benched, but that he accepted it and did his best to help the team. You can't ask for anything more than that.
(Edited to correct a typo.)

Some funny putdowns in that thread.

I think they were more than rumors.
It turned into one of the many reasons bear fans wanted Jeff to go. Most seemed to believe Jeff did everything to get and then keep Allen.Â

If there's any truth to it, this falls on Tedford. No coach should let a player dictate these kinds of terms. I can see Tedford seeking Maynard so as to sway Allen to come, too, but beyond that best player wins. I personally think that if there'd been a QB ready to play and better than Maynard, that Tedford would've played him. In all likelihood Allen would've loved it, b/c then he would've been thrown to accurately and thus accumulated more receiving yards. I remember seeing Allen get pretty frustrated with Maynard's inaccuracy.

If that was true and Redford did bench Maynard, I have a hard time imagining a player voluntarily quitting the football team to follow through on his threat. It seems like a silly rumor.

I always found that rumor to be far fetched. Tedford can't be so dumb as to think that one WR, no matter how good he is, is worth compromising the QB position. I think Maynard really was the best QB available. Every time they pulled in an alternate player, they seemed to do worse than Maynard. Tedford just lost his QB touch. I wouldn't be surprised that Maynard owed his scholarship to his relationship to Allen, but not his being named the starting QB.

Regarding Tedford's not being a great QB recruiter, one of the announcers following the 49er game said that Kaepernick's family called requesting a tryout with Kal, and was told Kal was not recruiting quarterbacks.

Is it normal for a family to call and setup a tryout? Seems like it would be a nightmare for schools to administer that, and "not recruiting your position" seems like a polite way to say no.
Regardless, as much as I love to laugh at Cal's misfortunes, it's hard to blame them on this one -- all but one FBS school decided to pass on Kaepernick at the time.

That turned out to be true.
